DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision of higher level data processing staff, performs a variety of technical duties involving the operation, installation, maintenance, and support of mini and microcomputer hardware and software systems; to serve as system administrator for the assigned data processing system; to develop mini and microcomputer application programs; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Positions allocated to this class are responsible for providing technical support in the operation and maintenance of mini and microcomputer systems for a Department's/Agency's in house data processing needs within established guidelines. In contrast with incumbents of the Information Systems Technician I classification, the Information Systems Technician II performs the full range of duties assigned to positions in the class under minimal supervision where Information Systems Technician I are still working in a training capacity. Positions in this class differ from positions in the class of Information Systems Specialist in that the latter performs professional duties involving the analysis, development, and implementation of data processing systems or sub systems requiring a comprehensive knowledge of overall system operation and design.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Acts as system administrator and monitors the operation of the assigned data processing system; identifies and corrects system malfunctions; contacts vendors as needed.

2. Develops and customizes system reports; works with user personnel to identify and implement changes to system operations.

3. Performs regular maintenance to system hardware; backs up, maintains, and restores system files; maintains appropriate records and files.

4. Installs, upgrades, troubleshoots, and configures mini and microcomputer systems and related peripherals including network hardware and software, printers, disk drives, keyboards, and monitors.

5. Loads and tests all upgraded and new computer software; maintains detailed installation and upgrade records.

6. Answers questions and provides technical assistance to department computer users regarding hardware and software problems; provides training to user personnel.

7. Develops custom applications, spreadsheets, and macros within established program guidelines as requested by mini and microcomputer users.

8. Convert, upload, and download computer files and data as requested by system users.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of the Knowledge and Abilities listed below is proof of sufficient education and experience for this class. The knowledge and abilities would typically be obtained by having gained one year of experience in developing mini and/or microcomputer based data processing systems, as well as by having some formal class work in computer science or data processing systems.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
