Under supervision, to perform heavy public contact activities and various clerical duties including work in the County Libraries and to do related work as required.
LIBRARY CLERK II Library Clerk II is the journey level classification. Positions in this class perform functions which require the exercise of independent judgment. Positions at this level are assigned duties involving direct interaction with the public, utilizing a computer system to check library materials in and out and registering library patrons; acquiring library materials; and processing and mending library materials. Incumbents perform a wide variety of moderately difficult clerical work, requiring the ability to choose among a limited number of alternatives in solving routine problems. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Positions in these classes are found in the County libraries. Incumbents perform public contact and clerical tasks under the supervision of a Lead or Supervising Clerk. Library Clerks I/II are distinguished from the class of Library Page in that Library Clerks' tasks are primarily involved with public contact or with more varied and complex clerical tasks. Library Clerks I/II are distinguished from Clerk I/II in that Library Clerks are found only in the County Libraries and in that their work is primarily concerned with public contact. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Checks library materials in and out using a library computer system. 2. Registers patrons utilizing a library computer system. 3. Investigates and resolves patron inquiries and concerns relating to circulation records. 4. Handles financial transactions using library computer system and a cash register; generates invoices for damaged library material from a data base program to bill liable patrons. 5. Shelves library materials according to an alpha, numerical or date order. 6. Processes new library materials and mends library materials. 7. Performs routine clerical tasks, such as typing and filing, search and retrieval of information on a data base system, and related clerical tasks using a library automated system. 8. Answers telephones and handles or routes calls as appropriate. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

LIBRARY CLERK II
Either I The equivalent of six months of full time experience (975 hours) in the class of Library Clerk I or an equivalent or higher level clerical class in the Alameda County classified service, (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts. Or II The equivalent of one year full time experience in clerical work, Or III Completion of a clerical training course approved by the Civil Service Commission. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

LIBRARY CLERK II Knowledge of: • Basic command of the English language. • Numerical and alphabetical filing systems. • Library procedures. • Use of a computer keyboard to enter and retrieve information from a library computer system. Ability to: • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with the public and co-workers. • Communicate effectively with the public, both in person and on the telephone. • Learn library procedures, including check in/out of materials. • Register patrons. • Process and mend library materials. • Sort and shelve library materials accurately. • Follow written and oral instructions. • Type accurately. • Interpret Library procedures for the public. • Perform clerical work of average difficulty which is not usually reviewed for technical details. • Identify computer input errors. • Troubleshoot and perform routine equipment maintenance. |
