DEFINITlON
Under general direction supervises, schedules, and directs the work of a messenger staff responsible for the pick up. and delivery of inter departmental mail, reports, and special materials to County agencies and departments, and performs other related duties. DlSTINGUISHING FEATURES A Supervising Messenger schedules messenger routes, provides for daily mail services and is responsible for all complaints and their resolution on a daily basis. The position differs from the next lower class of Messenger because of the supervisory, scheduling, and planning responsibilities. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Supervises, trains, assigns, and evaluates the messenger staff. 2. Plans and schedules the work of subordinate staff. 3. Consults with departments concerning their specific mail and special handling and arranges for special services as requested. 4. Delivers special mail and materials on a daily basis, and makes extra runs required by departments. 5. Supervises the maintenance and care of the messenger vehicles and arranges for vehicle service. 6. Reviews complaints and acts to resolve them. 7. Organizes mail rooms for delivery and sorting efficiency. 8. Prepares attendance reports. 9. Maintains QIC code book and assigns new numbers as needed. l0. Acts as a Messenger, performing all their tasks as required. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I Completion of the Alameda County Management Academy “Management and Supervision Certificate Program” may substitute for six (6) months of the required qualifying experience. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
|

Knowledge of: • Principles of supervision • County of Alameda cities, roads and directions • Scheduling techniques • General care of vehicles. Abilities: • Motivating and directing staff • Training employees to meet their work schedules, and in the use of their vehicles • Working effectively and harmoniously with personnel in all County departments • Maintaining simple records • Speaking clearly; and reading maps LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds. • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions. • Ability to drive up to 120 miles per day. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
