Pedestrian Crossing Guards are responsible for safely escorting elementary school children across street intersections within marked crosswalks.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This classification differs from the next higher level class of Supervising Pedestrian Crossing Guard in that the latter is responsible for ensuring that all designated pedestrian crossing locations are adequately covered |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.
l. Controls traffic with a mechanical or hand signal to permit school children to cross the road safely. 2. Controls the children congregated at street crossing points and permits the children to cross the street only when they can safely do so. 3. Reports the license number of traffic violators, endangering pedestrian safety, to California Highway Patrol. 4. Reports to school authorities children who do not follow safety rules. 5. Instructs children and student crossing guard assistants in elements of traffic safety. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least l8 years of age.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Vision and hearing sufficient to perceive potential traffic hazards, to detect warning signals, traffic control devices and other indicators of potentially hazardous situations; freedom from color blindness; and physical ability sufficient to swiftly remove pedestrians from dangerous traffic situations. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

KNOWLEDGE OF:
General traffic laws relating to pedestrian right of way, speed and speed limits in various districts and areas such as business and residential districts, parks and playgrounds; General elements of traffic safety and traffic regulation. ABILITY TO: Get along with children and maintaining their respect and obedience; Observe and remember license numbers and details of traffic incidents; Regulate flow of vehicular traffic for maximum safety of the pedestrian crossing the street and without unreasonable inconvenience to the motorist; Stand for several hours and be out of doors in all kinds of weather; Instruct children in elements of traffic safety. |
