DESCRIPTION

Supervising Pedestrian Crossing Guards are responsible for assigning and scheduling Pedestrian Crossing Guards to all designated school crossing locations; assigning relief guards to specific crossing intersections; and performing related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This class differs from the next lower level class of Pedestrian Crossing Guard in that the latter is responsible for escorting school children across designated school crossing locations. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Trains Pedestrian Crossing Guards in carrying out their duties and responsibilities. 2. Works with schools to develop work schedules. 3. Supervises field counts by guards to determine if schedules require changes. 4. Verifies time sheets of all subordinate personnel. 5. Assigns emergency relief guards as needed. 6. Interviews prospective Pedestrian Crossing Guards. 7. Evaluates the work performance of subordinate crossing guards. 8. Recommends disciplinary action for subordinate personnel. 9. Makes periodic field visits to all the crossing locations during school operation. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

At least 6 months experience supervising a group of subordinate employees.
Able to clearly read, write and speak English. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Vision and hearing sufficient to perceive potential traffic hazards, to detect warning signals, traffic control devices and other indicators of potentially hazardous situations; freedom from color blindness; and physical ability sufficient to swiftly remove pedestrians from dangerous traffic situations. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of: • General knowledge of traffic laws relating to pedestrian right-of-way. • Speeds and speed limits in various districts and areas such as business and residential districts, parks, schools, and playgrounds. • General knowledge of the elements of traffic safety and traffic regulation. • Knowledge of basic elements of supervision. Ability to: • Plan and schedule and verify the hours of the Pedestrian Crossing Guards. • Handle emergency sick relief problems. • Handle and report injuries. • Train Pedestrian Crossing Guards. • Work with schools in developing schedules. • Work independently. |
