Under general supervision, to perform a variety of clerical tasks; to assist regular full-time clerical personnel during peak workload periods; and to perform related other duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This class is composed of positions that are filled intermittently as required by workload. Positions may be filled for durations of a few days to a few months. This class is distinguished from other clerical classes in that incumbents are employed on a temporary or as-needed basis. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Assists visitors and callers at the counter and over the telephone by providing information, referring them to appropriate source of information, distributing forms, posting bulletins and performing other information dissemination tasks required in conducting departmental business. 2. Proofreads materials for accuracy and statistical tabulations; maintains operational records by transferring data from one record to another; performs alphanumeric or chronological filing; types a variety of correspondence and other materials. 3. Opens, sorts, categorizes and distributes incoming mail, applications and various forms. 4. Supplies inserting machine with materials for preparation of mailings; prepares form notices, letters and documents; weighs and stamps outgoing mail; stuffs envelopes for mailing. 5. May operate office machines and devices, such as a 1O-key calculator, computer, copying machine, microfiche viewer; searches and retrieves computer file information using a computer terminal (CRT); processes voter ballot cards through card readers. 6. May perform inspection and repair tasks on voting booths; handles heavy bundles such as ballots, affidavits or other election materials; works on assembly of election materials; prepares, loads or unloads precinct election supplies; and operates county vehicles for pick up or delivery. 7. Receives and transfers calls in a department, using the County telephone system. |

Experience: The equivalent of six months’ full-time experience in clerical work. License: Some positions in this class require possession of a Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.
Knowledge of: • Basic elements of good English usage, alphabetizing, spelling and arithmetic. Ability to: • Perform general clerical work and learn specific operations, procedures and equipment of the office. • Spell and use English correctly. • Make arithmetical computations. • Understand and follow oral and written directions. • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with the public. • File alphanumerically, chronologically and by address. Selection Certification Criteria: A. For positions requiring the skill in typing or data entry at a speed of not less than 40 words per minute from clear copy. Typing or data entry occupies more than l0% of working time. B. For positions requiring lifting and moving heavy objects of 50-l00 lbs. in a warehouse setting and picking up and delivering supplies to various locations in the County. |
