Under general direction creates timely and accurate financial statements, administers financial systems and analyzes financial data to complete reports and to make recommendations and other related duties.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES The Retirement Accountant III is located in the Alameda County Employees’ Retirement Association and reports to the Retirement Assistant Accounting Manager. It is a professional level position, which includes responsibility for continuous project management, advance problem solving skills and responsibility for integration of numerous reports and systems to complete assigned tasks. Retirement Accountant III’s leads and trains accountants and fiscal-clerical personnel. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Directs, reviews, and approves the work of staff accountants in a variety of balance sheet classifications, including cash, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accounts payable and accounts receivable. 2. Provides on-going reassessment of current departmental procedures, implementing improvements to work flow and transaction documentation, as advisable for efficient operation. 3. Trains new employees. 4. Prepares monthly financial statements and other reports by analyzing and summarizing financial and statistical data. Identifies significant financial reporting events and prepares footnote disclosures for annual audited financial statements. 5. Prepares a variety of highly complex periodic and special reports on pension fund requirements, including investment performance, actuarial analysis (e.g. ERISA reporting, DOL standards) and compliance with state and federal tax law. 6. Examines and analyzes the Association’s fiscal operations, recommending enhancements to the department’s record-keeping, financial accounting and budgetary controls, as advisable for efficient operation. 7. Assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual budgets, including technical accounting and statistical analysis to support appropriate funding levels. Analyzes institutional investment and pension accounting records for use in preparing annual cash flows and budgets. 8. Prepares trend analysis report of cash disbursements. Forecasts, calculates and analyzes prepaid contributions, investment income and expenses. 9. Develop and maintain financial forecast including statement of cash flow. 10. Prepares a variety of highly complex periodic and special report involving statistics, and legal requirements, such as tax compliance, ERISA, DOL standard of application. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
The equivalent of three years in the class of Retirement Accountant II in the Alameda County classified service. Or II The equivalent of three years full-time experience in the class of Senior Accountant or Auditor II in the Alameda County classified service. Or III Education: Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in accounting, finance or business administration, AND Experience: The equivalent of five years full-time increasingly responsible professional accounting or auditing experience (which included accounting/fiscal duties and responsibilities). Experience must also include two years of supervisory responsibility. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
