DESCRIPTION
Under general direction, to pick up, store, and dispose of surplus materials, equipment and supplies; to supervise Supply Clerks in inventory control, moving equipment, removing surplus property and storage; and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Assists Property and Salvage Manager in picking up, storing, and disposing of surplus materials, equipment and supplies.

2. Supervises Supply Clerks engaged in placing inventory identification numbers on equipment, maintaining inventory records, moving furniture and equipment, and removing surplus or unused property.

3. Reviews and processes Salvage and Equipment Transfer request forms, for possible reissue, trade-in or sale of salvage items; arranges with departments for their inspection of available items in salvage.

4. Stock piles ferrous and nonferrous scrap metals for sale; prepares sale of houses and buildings for removal or demolition.

5. Searches for new sources of revenue from the sale of disposed materials and equipment; keeps current records of bidders for surplus material and property.

6. Prepares and mails invitations for bids on surplus property and accepts or rejects such bids, including the annual bidding on constant surplus such as silver, X-Ray film, paper and grease.

7. Selects salvage items for auction house sale; assists in preparing motor vehicle equipment auctions and does auctioneering.

8. Informs departments when equipment has been replaced and checks to assure the replaced surplus item is turned into salvage.

9. Identifies and verifies items and specifications from purchase orders and stores invoices while relieving subordinate personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I
Experience:

The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Storekeeper I, or the equivalent of two years of experience in the class of Supply Clerk II, or the equivalent of three years of experience in the class of Supply Clerk I in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) Some experience in auctioneering is desirable.

Or II

The equivalent of three years of increasingly responsible and varied storekeeping experience.
Or III

Some acceptable combination of education and appropriate experience.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

· Materials, supplies and equipment used by County departments.
· Current laws concerning motor vehicle disposal and disposal of other surplus property.
· Potential purchasers and markets for surplus County property, and suppliers of new equipment ordered by County departments.
· Auctioneering.

Ability to:

· Evaluate the usefulness and worth of surplus County property.
· Work effectively with bidders, department representatives and the general public.
· Type in conjunction with work.
· Drive a large truck.
· Lift and move large and heavy pieces of furniture and equipment.
· Write and speak effectively.
