Provide technical and informational support of the systems managed by the designated workgroup. Assist with the development of documentation, data analysis, project assistance, and other related duties as required.

Additionally, and under close supervision, incumbents participate in the Information Technology Specialist II Training Program, which is intended to expose them to and, through instruction and practical application, provide them with the knowledge and abilities required to perform the duties of the next-higher level in this class series.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Information Technology Specialist II is the second level in a flexibly staffed four class series responsible for the support of various computer information systems. Incumbents in this classification will work under the general supervision of the respective workgroup appointed administrative staff.

This classification is unique to the Information Technology Department (ITD). It is distinguished from information technology classifications in other departments in that the latter provide operation, maintenance, development and/or technical or user support services at various levels with respect to systems utilized within those departments/agencies or between a limited number of departments/agencies. Information Technology Specialists II are involved with the performance of system control, information processing and output functions with respect to the full range of systems utilized by and between ITD and all of its customer departments/agencies for the benefit of those departments/agencies.

This classification is distinguished from the next lower class of Information Technology Specialist I in that Information Technology Specialists II function independently and under general supervision in processing computer output and preparing data and reports for distribution or maintenance support activities, whereas Information Technology Specialists I receive instruction in these duties and perform them at the trainee level under close supervision.

This classification is distinguished from the next higher class of Information Technology Specialist III in that Information Technology Specialists II function at the trainee level, under close supervision with respect to learning the operation of on-line and off-line peripheral computer equipment, scheduling, batch processing operation and procedures or application development methodologies and techniques. During the course of this training, Information Technology Specialists II are expected to achieve a level of proficiency in these activities that will allow their performance on an independent basis and under general supervision at the next higher level in the series. In contrast, incumbents at the Information Technology Specialist III level perform these duties independently and not in a trainee capacity.
