DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to be responsible for production and network monitoring of all areas on a shift by assigning lower-level operators to scheduled, tasks and assure that all areas and functions are kept in working order during the shift and that the production schedule is being followed; and to do related work as required. Operations Assistant Supervisors may be assigned to the Production Support Unit, with the responsibility of security, change control and software administration.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Operations Assistant Supervisors are the advanced level specialists in the Information Technology Specialists series. Incumbents in the class are typically working shift leaders who assist a Computer Operations Supervisor in the operation of an entire shift of Information Technology Specialists. Supervision of the Operations Assistant Supervisor is received from the Computer Operators Supervisor of the shift to which the Operations Assistant Supervisor is assigned. Positions in the class of Operations Assistant Supervisor differ from those in the next lower class of Information Technology Specialists IV and Technical Support Specialist II in that the two mentioned positions are journey-level specialists that they do not have the responsibility as shift leaders for all work stations and monitoring tasks. Operations Assistant Supervisors are further distinguished from positions in the next higher class of Computer Operations Supervisor in that Computer Operations Supervisors are full-time supervisors with full responsibility for the computer operations and personnel management for an entire shift.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Works as a shift leader and assists in the direction and performance of an entire shift of; Information Technology Specialists; assists in the writing and revision of procedures, and acts as shift supervisor in the absence of the next higher class.

2. Assigns and reviews the work of Information Technology Specialists on an assigned shift; instructs new specialists in the set-up and operation and monitoring of a wide variety of information technology equipment.
3. Performs analysis of current policies and procedures and makes recommendation improvements. This can include modifying procedures, recommending training or introducing new technologies.
4. Expected to keep abreast of technology trends.
5. Operates a large, medium and small-scale computers and wide variety of related data infrastructure and information technology equipment; trains specialists on this equipment.
6. Helps Information Technology Specialists identify computer and network malfunctions and program failures.
7. Acts as a shift leader by directly reviewing work and enforcing standards of performance.
8. Acts to ensure that timeliness of output is maintained.
9. Contacts programmers, vendors and management for resolution or escalation of more difficult program and equipment failures.
10. Assumes responsibility of performing on-call weekend and holiday duty.
11. When working in the Production Support Unit:
a. Reviews various utility software to assure optimum performance.
b. Diagnoses and corrects security and other system software utility, problems,
c. Recommends improvements to production support methodologies.
d. Prepares and revises training material and manuals for data center operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

The equivalent of one-year full-time experience in the class of Information Technology Specialist IV or Technical Support Specialist II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of four years’ full-time, increasingly responsible, experience in the operation of multi-platform data center with complex network activities including the equivalent of one-year experience supervising other Information Technology Specialists.

Special Requirements:

The Information Technology Department’s Data Center Division operates on a 24-hour-per-day, seven-day-per-week, 365-day-per-year basis. In order to provide these services, all Data Center Services Division employees may be required to work grave, swing and day shifts as well as weekends and holidays as necessary.

Physical Characteristics:

Ability to lift 50-pound boxes.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the "Examples of Duties" section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Principles of operation of a variety of computer equipment, including mainframe, UNIX and Windows based technologies.
• Principles of networking technologies.
• The functions of system software including such as operating systems and utility software. Experience with a variety of networking monitoring tools.
• Good understanding of large scale print production.

The incumbent in the Production Support Unit should in addition have:

Knowledge of:

• Methods of diagnosing and correcting software problems.
• Methods of evaluating the performance system.

Ability to:

• Communicate orally and in writing.
• Analyze and problem solve.
• Plan and organize.
• Management Control.
