DESCRIPTION
Under general direction, to plan, direct, coordinate, and supervise the activities of the Information Technology Specialist and Technical Support Specialist on an assigned shift; to develop and implement computer, network and production procedures; and perform related work as required.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the first level with full-time supervisory responsibility in the Data Center Services Division of the Information Technology Department. Computer Operations Supervisors are responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of networking, application procedures and computer processing on an assigned shift in the Information Technology Department. Supervision is received from the Manager of Computer Operations who has primary responsibility for overall coordination and utilization of all of the activities of, computing platforms, security, scheduling, documentation, Help Desk support and all print activities within the installation. Positions in this class differ from those in the lower class of Operations Assistant Supervisor in that incumbents of the class of Computer Operations Supervisor are full-time supervisors with responsibility for all computers, technical support and networking equipment on an assigned shift, whereas Operators Assistant Supervisors are working shift leaders who assist Computer Operations Supervisors in the overall direction of an assigned shift within the Information Technology Department.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Plans, assigns, supervises, reviews, and evaluates the work of all personnel on an assigned shift in the Data Center Services Division of the Information Technology Department.
2. Performs analysis on current policies and procedures and makes recommendations for improvements. This can include modifying procedures, recommending training or introducing new technologies.
3. Expected to keep abreast of industry technology trends.
4. Assumes full responsibility for supervising highest possible quality from various areas to include various computer platforms, printers, network documentation, security, Help Desk support, library and scheduling.
5. Confers with others to determine report requirements and production deadlines; implements equipment and work schedules to meet deadlines and ensure effective equipment utilization.
6. Helps computer operators identify equipment, network and program failures.
7. Supervises the training and instruction of personnel in the operation of the various computer infrastructure and peripheral equipment. Confers with the programming staff regarding new applications and processes.
8. Contacts programmers, vendors and escalates to executive management regarding resolution of critical program and equipment failures.
9. Schedules application runs to meet predetermined deadlines.
10. Receives and reviews turnover and status reports at beginning of shift.
11. Keeps, reviews and reports on attendance records.
12. Prepares a monthly shift assignment to include weekend and holiday coverage.
13. Diagnoses networking problems, consults with Infrastructure Services, telephone repair personnel, vendor and others as necessary.
14. When acting as Helpdesk Supervisor:
a. Plans, assigns, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of the Helpdesk Unit.
b. Trains subordinates on all activities relating to the Helpdesk application and reporting needs.
c. Communicates with customers, vendors, programmers and executive management.
d. Prepares and revises training materials for Helpdesk and Operations staff.

15. When acting as Production Support Supervisor:
a. Plans, assigns, supervises, reviews, and evaluates the work of the Production Support Unit.
b. Develops and maintains documentation and procedures for handling security, scheduling and change control.
c. Plans training for proficiency and backup purposes. Coordinates work and work station schedules within the unit.
d. Communicates with programmers, data center supervisors and executive management in matters relating to change control, security and scheduling problems.
15. e. Performs as an Operations Analyst or Special Project Manager by researching, analyzing, recommending and reporting on matters relating to operational procedures, documentation, security, change control, and scheduling.
f. Responsible for identifying and resolving forms problems; communicates with vendors, other departments, programmers and management when resolving forms problems.
g. Provides technical support to staff for development and maintenance for software aids, and vendor supplied software packages, including coordination with Technical Services to implement new releases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

The equivalent of three years of experience in the class of Operations Assistant Supervisor in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of five years of recent, full-time, increasingly responsible paid experience in the operation of large-scale computers and complex networking environment.

The Information Technology Department’s Data Center Division operates on a 24-hour-per-day, seven-day-per-week, 365-days-per-year basis. In order to provide these services, all Data Center Services employees may be required to work grave, swing, and day shifts, as well as weekends and holidays as necessary.

Physical Characteristics:

Ability to lift 50-pound boxes.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
