DESCRIPTION
|
Under close supervision, as a Trainee, to assist in all phases of offset machine operation by performing the less difficult work; to do unskilled miscellaneous work in the various operations of the Central Services Division of the Purchasing Department; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This is an entry-level class for persons with demonstrated aptitude and ability to learn the work of an Offset Equipment Operator. In addition to observation and study, the employees in this class performs simple and routine tasks involved in the operation and maintenance of offset equipment. Employees in the higher level class of Offset Equipment Operator II are fully experienced operators who may reproduce multi-color copies using any weight, size or variety of paper within the capability of the machine. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Learns to recognize the names, grain, sizes and printing characteristics of paper; learns to operate an offset process camera and prepares press ready copy; learns the operation, image characteristics and sizes, motion, capabilities, adjustments and cleaning of offset equipment; learns to perform routine maintenance on presses. 2. Assists a journey-level operator in the operation of a press; makes press ready, loads, operates, maintains and adjusts the machine. 3. Assists in the operation of an offset process camera; sets up and adjusts camera; makes masters by direct exposure and burning methods. 4. Assists in bindery work, as needed; collates by hand and machine; folds, pads, drills, cuts, staples, perforates, glues and wire stitches. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Training:
Successful completion of a one-semester course in print shop (the equivalent of one month of full-time experience may be substituted for the required training). NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |

Knowledge of/Ability to: • Learn quickly the principles and techniques of offset equipment operation. • Correctly perceive color and spatial relationships. • Understand and follow written and oral instructions. • Demonstrate an aptitude for offset work.
