DESCRIPTION
Under direction, to operate an offset machine for reproducing copy in one or more colors from metal or plastic plates; to clean and make adjustments on the machine; and to do related work as required.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Incumbents of positions in this class are fully experienced offset machine operators and are expected to reproduce copies in more than one color and to use any weight, size or variety of paper that the machine is capable of handling. Occasionally, they may be assigned to operate other machines and carry out other tasks related to reproduction work.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Receives orders for offset reproduction with master metal or plastic plates and runs the required number of copies, observing established priorities and work standards.

2. Prepares machine for operation, cleaning rollers, adjusting machine for paper type and weight, adjusting dampening system, and bringing ink to proper consistency.

3. Adjusts machine to center printing properly on page.

4. Cleans machine parts and plates; after use applies preservative to metal plates; makes adjustments to machine and may replace standard damaged parts.

5. May use a wide variety of paper for reproduction work in one or more colors; may order and maintain stock of supplies, such as inks, solvents and cleaning fluids.

6. May cut paper to required size, drill holes, assemble multi-pages runs in proper order, gather, pad, fold and perform other bindery tasks.

7. Operates other machines used in the reproduction process.

8. Maintains work area in a clean and safe manner, observing all rules and policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The equivalent of 90 quarter or 60 semester units in Graphic Arts or a Certificate of Completion in Graphic Arts with an option in Pressroom Techniques.

AND

The equivalent of two years’ full-time experience as an offset equipment operator.

NOTE: Additional experience as an offset equipment operator may substitute for the education and training requirement on a year-for-year basis.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Types, quality, weights and uses of paper, inks, solvents and various patented products made for use with offset machines.
• Offset machines and methods of adjusting them for operation.
• Modern office methods and machines.
• Quality close register two and four color printing.
• Offset machine maintenance and lubrication.

Abilities to:

• Prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Operate and adjust an offset machine in an efficient manner.
• Understand work orders and follow instructions.
• Clean machine parts and plates and perform minor
maintenance.
