DESCRIPTION

Under direction, to plan, direct and manage personnel, resources, activities, and operation of the emergency services dispatch function within the Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services and to perform related duties as required.    

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES  

This position, located in the Sheriff's Department, has managerial responsibility for the development and implementation of programs, policies, and procedures relating to the operation of the ALCO integrated emergency resources dispatching facility.  This class reports to the Division Chief, Sheriff, assigned to OES, a badged class responsible for the operation of the OES Division.  This class is distinguished from the next lower-class Emergency Services Dispatch Supervisor, by the lower class having a shift supervisory responsibility.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE:  The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Plans, develops, and directs implementation of emergency resources’ dispatch programs and related policies and procedures.
  2. Plans, directs, and reviews the work of dispatch supervisory personnel.  
  3. Manages personnel to include selection of personnel, coordination, orientation, training and evaluations; supervision of staff, hears grievances.
  4. Maintains current knowledge of technical developments and legislation affecting public safety resources dispatching services.
  5. Dictates correspondence and prepares complex dispatch related reports and memoranda.
  6. Prepares and supervises presentation of written procedures of public safety resources dispatching services.
  7. Coordinates and maintains harmonious relationships with County departments and other agencies and groups.
  8. Represents Office of Emergency Services in public, professional, and technical areas relating to public safety resources dispatch services.
  9. Prepares annual budget requirements for dispatch services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER I  

Experience:  

The equivalent of four (4) years of full-time experience in the class of Emergency Services Dispatch Supervisor in the Alameda County classified service.  

Substitution:  

Possession of an Associate degree or higher in a relevant field from an accredited college or university, a Registered Public Safety (RPL) certification from the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO), or an Emergency Number Professional (ENP) certification from the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) may substitute for one (1) year of the required qualifying experience.  

OR II  

Education:  

Possession of an Associate degree in Communications, Administration of Justice, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field.  

AND  

Experience:      

The equivalent of five (5) years of full-time progressively responsible dispatching experience in a large public safety communications center, at least three (3) years of the experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.    

NOTE:    The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
