DESCRIPTION

Under direction, to perform difficult design work involving water treatment plants and water transmission systems on a project basis; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES The Mechanical Engineer is comparable in level of professional engineering competency to a Civil Engineer III. Both must be fully qualified in design work and have the ability to carry an engineering project to completion. The Mechanical Engineer reports directly to a Supervising Civil Engineer who acts as Section Chief of the Water Resources Division, located in the Flood Control and Conservation Department. This position is responsible for planning, organizing and executing an entire project in a designated geographical area while receiving a minimum of supervision. Civil Engineer I’s and II’s are occasionally assigned to a project headed by the Mechanical Engineer in which case the Mechanical Engineer assigns and supervises their work. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Plans, organizes, and reviews or personally prepares drawings, specifications and estimates in connection with the construction, redesign, or maintenance of existing or proposed water treatment plants and distribution systems. 2. Performs difficult engineering office work in connection with cost estimating, progress reports, economic analysis and research, or other specialized technical studies. 3. Acts as resident engineer on water treatment facilities and water distribution systems. 4. Participates in the supervision of design and the preparation of specifications; inspects work in progress or equipment to be installed. 5. Conducts hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical studies; writes reports and makes recommendations on the maintenance and operations of the District's water supply system and other related areas. 6. Coordinates and develops the overall design considerations for alterations and expansion of existing water treatment and transmission facilities. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
The equivalent of one year of full-time experience working in the class of Civil Engineer II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) Or II Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in Mechanical Engineering, AND Experience: The equivalent of three years of progressively responsible, full-time, professional mechanical engineering experience. Or III Possession of valid certificate of registration as a Mechanical Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers. Special Requirements: Work experience must include a minimum of one year in planning or designing water system facilities. License: Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle operator's license. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
