DESCRIPTION

Engineering CAD/D Technicians perform a variety of complex office and field engineering work; establish and maintain detailed and inter-related engineering record-keeping systems; perform computerized technical drafting/design work; perform related work as required.    

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES  

Engineering CAD/D Technician II’s are journey-level drafting technicians who under general supervision may act in a lead capacity on project-by-project basis. Positions in the class of Engineering CAD/D Technician II are assigned major Computer Aided Drafting/Design (CAD/D) projects involving complex technical design work or may perform a specialized function and have program responsibility in their area of specialization.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE:    The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Performs civil engineering design drafting duties and computations, operating Autodesk CAD and Civil Design software, other graphic software (including but not limited to Bluebeam, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop) and related computer systems and software.
  2. Drafts plans, profiles, cross sections, details, alignments and illustration topographical features from written or electronic data.
  3. Assists with the planning and layout of technical contract plans, and the preparation of engineering reports or studies, including spreadsheets, charts, graphs, technical illustrations and displays.
  4. Performs calculation, prepares maps and right-of-way drawings as required; reviews proposed construction drawings for drafting accuracy and logic in layout, forwarding plans requiring review to appropriate personnel.
  5. Manipulates field data gathered by survey crews and drafts topographical features such as structural segments of flood control or road projects, and other objects whose position is important to the design of a project.  Receives, analyzes, plots and files data used to maintain, expand upon, and refine maps and records; reviews survey records.
  6. Digitizes and scans maps, plans, drawings and legal documents for applicable use in the design process.
  7. Maintains complex office records, including maps, plans, boundary descriptions, county road data permits, legal documents and similar materials.
  8. Calculates and computes quantities and costs of materials for routine construction projects.
  9. Researches, drafts and reviews records of survey and parcel maps.
  10. Obtains, analyzes and interprets title reports and property deeds; also determines frontage adjustments or prorations, calculates the present and future right-of-way lines and makes necessary drawings; and writes the proper deed.
  11. Performs engineering drafting design, which includes setting vertical and horizontal control; prepares channelizations, engineering signing and striping details; also reviews and advises on standard engineering requirements with other offices and agencies.
  12. Provides lead supervision to lower level Engineering CAD/D Technicians or may act in a lead capacity on more difficult projects or assignments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER I  

Experience:  

The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Engineering CAD/D Technician I in the Alameda County classified service.  

OR II  

Education:  

Possession of an Associate of Arts Degree in Engineering Technology CAD/D Technology or a closely related field, including instruction in CAD equivalent to 3 quarters from an accredited educational institution.  

AND  

Experience:  

The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time increasingly responsible and varied sub-professional civil engineering drafting experience in the preparation of civil engineering contract drawings and plans using CAD.

OR III  

Experience:  

The equivalent of three (3) years of recent-full time increasingly responsible sub-professional civil engineering experience in the preparation of civil engineering contract drawings and plans using CAD.  

License:  

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License  

NOTE:    The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE:    The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the "Examples of Duties" section of this specification.  

Knowledge of:

  • Office methods and procedures, including filing and record-keeping practices.
  • Mathematics, including trigonometry.
  • Engineering drafting materials and techniques.
  • Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) equipment and software.
  • Related software that performs input and reduction, survey collection, coordinate geometry, digital terrain modeling, contour generation, earthworks and design.
  • Fundamentals of engineering drafting design and land surveying.
  • Technical report writing.
  • Basic principles and practices of land surveying work.  

Ability to:

  • Review engineering plans and documents for compliance with agency and County standards.
  • Prepare complete and comprehensive written reports involving engineering plans and documents.
  • Do accurate engineering drafting work from electronic mediums, survey notes, sketches and other detailed guides.
  • Read and interpret legal descriptions, engineering drawings, survey notes and tract descriptions.
  • Communicate and organize work effectively.
  • Provide lead supervision and coordinate the work of others.
