This series specification describes two levels of Survey Technician classifications which, under close supervision at the lower level and under direction at the high level, perform sub-professional land surveying tasks in both field and office; and perform other related duties. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES The class of Survey Technician II is distinguished from the lower one of Survey Technician I in that the former class has demonstrated through performance of the above tasks the possession of the necessary knowledge and abilities required for this class series listed at the end of this job description. This class is further distinguished from the next higher one of Survey Technician III/Land Surveyor I in that the latter class has lead responsibility as the senior member of the survey team and is responsible for achieving the performance objectives of assigned jobs. Also, with possession of certification by the State as a Land Surveyor, the Survey Technician III/Land Surveyor I is the first level of the professional level Land Surveyor class series. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed. 1. Assists in obtaining accurate survey information in the field by efficiently using traditional and contemporary survey instruments and equipment including: Electronic total stations with electronic data collectors utilizing point coding, break-lines, and mass-points; Global Position System (GPS) receivers in static, rapid static, and kinematic modes; automatic levels for control surveys and construction staking; and programmable calculators to perform coordinate geometry calculations in the field. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Continued 2. Assists in editing and plotting survey information in the office using computer hardware and software including: Personal computers to reduce, analyze and adjust field survey results; and computer-aided design/drafting environment (CADD) to produce multi-colored pen plots depicting the results of the field surveys as detailed planimetric plots, contours, profiles and cross-sections. Computer files and hard-copy will be created for use by the design engineer. 3. Performs elementary map examination tasks in support of the County Surveyor’s Office. These State mandated map examination categories include Record of Surveys, Tract Maps, Parcel Maps, Corner Records, LAFCO Boundary Maps, Certificates of Correction, and Amended Maps. Examination duties include math checks, file room research, deed evaluations, technical report writing, and filing. 4. Assists in calculating the dimensions, areas and ownership information required on legal documents used for property acquisitions and/or disposals. 5. Safely operates a motor vehicle in freeway traffic and in off road situations. 6. Performs flagging and other related safety tasks to protect the public and other county employees while conducting surveying projects. 7. Uses hand and power tools to perform manual labor related to survey activities, including driving stakes on construction sites to guide the placement of new construction. 8. Assists with training co-workers. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I The equivalent of two years full-time experience in the class of Survey Technician I in the Alameda County classified service. Or II Education: Completion of a minimum of 60 semester/90 quarter units from an accredited college or university consisting of at least 12 semester/18 quarter units of combined course work in mathematics (college algebra and trigonometry) and/or land surveying. AND Experience: The equivalent of three years full-time land surveying experience that included at least two years of land surveying field experience. Or III The equivalent of four years’ full-time land surveying experience under the charge of a Registered Land Surveyor that included at least two years of land surveying field experience. License: |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification. Knowledge of: · Basic surveying practices and drafting procedures. · Mathematics used in surveying and engineering, particularly algebra and trigonometry. · Terminology and methodology of land surveying as applied to property, topographic and construction surveying. · Safety procedures pertaining to the work. · Care and use of survey equipment used on land survey teams. · Use of computer software used in land survey office work. · Principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). · Computer literacy including Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and GIS. Ability to: · Correctly operate and maintain surveying instruments. · Keep accurate and correct records of information gathered by survey team and make clear, concise reports. · Read and understand property descriptions. · Learn new computer software that supports land surveying equipment. |
