DESCRIPTION
Under general direction, to supervise and perform diversified architectural work; to prepare architectural plans and specifications for modification and maintenance of buildings and structures; to coordinate all special project requests with County departments; to develop cost estimates for modification and maintenance projects; to develop reports relative to the County’s Space Allocation Program; to inspect and review work done by other Architectural Engineers; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The Architectural Engineering Manager is responsible for directing a staff of professional Architectural Engineers and for performing architectural services requested for major redesign of existing County facilities or complexes. This classification is distinguished from the class of Architect (Public Works) in that the latter performs architectural work on capital or construction projects, while the Architectural Engineering Manager is responsible for special, modification or maintenance projects. The incumbent of this class works independently in consulting with the County Administrator’s Office and County department heads on all major remodeling and alteration projects and makes recommendations on costs, procedures, design and finalization of these projects.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Supervises the planning, design and preparation of architectural drawings, specifications and estimates for the modification and alteration of buildings and related structures.

2. Confers with operating departments to establish building and space requirements; advises on feasibility of projects; supervises the preparation of drawings, reports and recommendations of findings.

3. Acts as coordinator of assigned projects; conducts feasibility studies on special projects; approves materials and drawings and makes recommendations.

4. Determines project space and program requirements if not already available; develops architectural solutions to these requirements for review by supervisors and the using department; prepares detailed design drawings and specifications of alterations of buildings; prepares general layout and perspective drawings of all types of buildings and equipment to illustrate proposed projects.

5. Directs the work of subordinate staff on special projects submitted by County Departments.

6. Supervises the redrafting of existing drawings to new scale or brings them up to date; drafts changes on master drawings when alterations take place; makes detailed technical drawings of electrical, plumbing, and structural alterations of, and additions to, existing buildings.

7. Determines the suitability of, and makes recommendations on, methods, materials, and equipment to be used on projects by contract architects and contractors.

8. Represents the department in meetings and conferences related to building materials or work standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

Experience:

The equivalent of seven years of work experience as an Architectural Engineer or the equivalent of six years as a Senior Architectural Engineer in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) (Possession of a bachelor’s degree in architecture or architectural engineering may substitute for four years of the required experience.)

Or II

Experience:

The equivalent of eight years of work experience as an architectural engineer and job coordinator. Experience must have included program responsibility, preparation of schematic plans and specifications, and preparation of cost estimates, construction plans and specifications (one year of the required experience must have included supervisory responsibility. Possession of a bachelor’s degree in architecture or architectural engineering may substitute for four years of the required general experience.)

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Architectural theory, practice and procedure.
• Construction methods and materials and their application to architectural and design phases of construction projects.
• State of California laws, ordinances, building codes, and regulations applicable to construction projects.
• Drafting techniques, materials and equipment.
• Principles of surveying and principles, techniques, and mathematics used in cost estimating and specification writing.

Abilities:

• Supervising, training, and reviewing the work of others.
• Dealing effectively with professional engineers and architects, County departments, contractors and other professional groups.
• Analyzing functional, special and structural problems and using professional judgment.
• Skillfully applying architectural techniques and methods to the solution of practical architectural problems.
• Communicating ideas effectively and preparing oral and written technical reports.
• Preparing complete architectural plans and specifications.
• Writing concise specifications.
