DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, performs paraprofessional and technical customer service for the Alameda County Library (Library) in direct support of library services. Also performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The Library Technician is a paraprofessional classification located in the Library. Employee performs customer service, information referral, public programming, and technical duties unique to the Library. 

Library Technicians are distinguished from the lower classification of Library Clerk II in that the former provide basic reference, program, and outreach support. Library Technicians are also distinguished from the higher classification of Librarian II, in that the latter has more independence and professional responsibility for service, programs, and outreach to a specific population.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each employee in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Answers reference questions and gives readers advisory services in person, over the phone, or online; routes and refers more difficult reference questions to a Librarian as appropriate.
  2. Assists in the designing, planning, promoting, and presenting library programs, including literature presentations, story times, crafts, displays, games, technology training, and other activities.
  3. Under the direction of a Librarian II or higher, assists with service in the County Jails as well as outreach services, including visits to schools, daycares, senior centers, nonprofit organizations, and facilities where Alameda County Library provides service.
  4. Performs bibliographic searches, registers and updates member accounts, and checks library material in and out using library software.
  5. Organizes, sorts, shelves, and displays library materials according to the library’s written standards. Under the direction of a Librarian II or higher, evaluates and removes old, outdated, or damaged material from library collections. 
  6. Investigates and resolves member account questions and concerns. 
  7. Handles financial transactions in compliance with library procedure.
  8. Instructs and assists members in the use of current technology and equipment provided by the library.
  9. Interprets Library Policy in the absence of a Librarian.
  10. Acts in a guiding capacity for page and clerical staff in the absence of a supervisor or librarian.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER I

Experience:

The equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience in the classification of Library Clerk II or an equivalent or higher-level classification in the Alameda County Library.

OR II
Experience:

Two (2) years of full-time customer service experience.

AND
Education:

60 semester or 90 quarter units of college.

OR III

Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (120 semester or 180 quarter units).

Special Requirements:

Push carts full of heavy books and lift up to 35 lbs.

Employees in this classification may be required to work evenings and weekends.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

  • Authors in various genres; both fiction and non-fiction.
  • Library operations.
  • Record keeping software and specialized search tools, such as Integrated Library Systems (ILS), online library catalogs and Windows software.
Ability to:

  • Problem solve.
  • Plan and organize work independently and collaboratively.
  • Communicate effectively with the public and colleagues, in person, online, in writing, and on the phone.
  • Create and edit graphic materials, presentations, and exhibits.
  • Speak about library materials and services to community groups of all ages.
  • Learn skills appropriate to library service, including new and existing library procedures.
  • Perform general clerical tasks using library digital tools and software.
  • Utilize library catalogs, consumer technology, and library-specific equipment.
  • Exercise interpersonal sensitivity while working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
