DESCRIPTION
This flexibly-staffed class series specification describes the journey-level classification in the Librarian series. Under general supervision, provides professional services for library members and assists in the operation of a library. Librarians II may be assigned to public services or technical services. Also performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the journey-level classification in the Librarian flex series located in the County Library. Librarian II performs more challenging reference work than Librarian I and may have responsibility for the direction and day-to-day operation of a program of service in a library. Librarian II also provides operational support and guidance during times when a manager is unavailable. 

Librarian II is also distinguished from Librarian III in that the latter is responsible for working in a specialized area with a high degree of expertise, while the former is more responsible for providing day-to-day journey-level library support in county libraries.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each employees in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Advises members on selection of materials; performs reference work; locates specific information or material requested; assists members in the use of physical and digital resources; and provides instruction on library resources.
  2. Under general direction, develops, implements, and evaluates assigned community services at a local library. Coordinates library services with local schools, partners, and other agencies serving the assigned community.
  3. Designs, plans, promotes, and presents library programs for diverse populations.
  4. Collaborates in developing a local collection appropriate for the assigned community served. Participates in the evaluation of materials in the local library collection.
  5. Promotes the mission and use of the County Library through marketing and community outreach activities. Represents the County Library at community events.
  6. Assists Library Managers in the development, interpretation, and application of local policies and procedures, the preparation of a budget, and the development and implementation of special projects.
  7. When assigned to Technical Services, classifies and catalogs library materials.
  8. When needed, coordinates library operations, and responds to address facility, situational, and emergency needs in collaboration with appropriate administrative contacts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER I
Experience:

The equivalent of one (1) year full-time experience in the classification of Librarian I in the Alameda County Library system.
OR II
Education:

Possession of a master’s degree in library science. 
AND
Experience:

The equivalent of one (1) year full-time, professional library experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • Push carts full of heavy books and lift up to 35 lbs.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

  • Principles and practices of librarianship, including those for information retrieval, reference and reader’s advisory work, and cataloging.

  • Speak about library materials and services to community groups of all ages.
  • Prepare proposals and reports for review.
  • Exercise interpersonal sensitivity while working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Classification and cataloging of library materials.
  • Troubleshoot common consumer technology and library technology issues.
  • Respond to occasional high-pressure situations.
