DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, Librarian I’s and II’s provide professional services for library patrons or assist in the operation of a library; may be assigned to general reference, children’s services, young adult services or technical services; and do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Librarian II is the journey-level position and generally specializes in general reference, children’s services, young adult services, or technical services. They may perform more difficult reference work than Librarian I’s and may have responsibility for general reference or the direction and day-to-day operation of a children’s or young adult program in a branch library. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Advises patrons on selection of library materials for personal use or study; performs reference work for adults and children; locates specific information or material requested; assists patrons in the use of automated and CD-ROM resources. 2. As a children’s or young adult librarian, may direct age-level services in the main library or a branch library under the direction of the Supervising Librarian; develops a collection of children’s or young adult materials; coordinates library services with local schools; plans and presents programs for children and young adults; and provides instruction in the use of library resources. 3. Assists in developing a branch collection appropriate for the community served, participates in the evaluation of materials for the library system using published review resources. 4. Assists Librarian II’s or Supervising Librarians in the operation of a branch library, including the interpretation and application of library regulations, the preparation of a budget, and the development and implementation of special projects involving library promotion and community outreach activities. 5. Classifies and catalogs library materials in the technical services division of the library system. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
Possession of a master’s degree in Library Science awarded by a school of librarianship accredited by the American Library Association, And The equivalent of one-year recent responsible full-time, professional library experience. Or II The equivalent of one year full-time experience in the class of Librarian I in the Alameda County Library system. Or III The equivalent of six months of full-time experience in the class of Librarian I in the Alameda County Library system, And The equivalent of one year of recent paid full-time professional library experience. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
