DESCRIPTION
Under minimal supervision, employees in the classification of Librarian III are specialized professional librarians with a high degree of expertise in an assigned specialized area. Also performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Employees in the classification of Librarian III are responsible for the development and implementation of assigned services supporting systemwide library operations.

Employees in the classification of Librarian III are distinguished from employees in the classification of Library Services Coordinator in that the former does not include coordinating a staff team or contributing to the hiring and evaluation of staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, the employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each employee in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Within an assigned area, selects, deselects, promotes, analyzes, evaluates, and improves library collections, resources, or content.
  2. Participates in drafting, developing, updating, interpreting, and implementing library procedures, and documentation. Provides input on related library policy.
  3. Creates content, resources, and tools for library staff and members to facilitate access to library collections or services.
  4. Instructs library staff, volunteers, and the public in the use of specialized resources or software within their area of expertise.
  5. Drafts proposals for budget requests; manages assigned budgets exercising fiscal responsibility and responding to community needs.
  6. Provides ongoing advice to library staff on the scope and development of a designated assigned special collection or service to a community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER I
Experience:

The equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience as a Librarian II in the Alameda County classified service.
OR II
Education:

Possession of a master's degree in library science. 
AND
Experience:

The equivalent of two (2) years’ full-time, responsible professional library experience.

Special Requirements:

Push carts full of heavy books and lift up to 35 lbs.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

  • Principles and practices of librarianship, including those for information retrieval, reference and reader’s advisory work, and cataloging.
  • Public library programs and their relationship to community needs.
  • Best practices in the promotion and evaluation of library services.
  • Library business methods, procedures, and practices.
Ability to:

  • Exercise interpersonal sensitivity while working effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Plan, manage, organize, and develop a specialized collection or service.
  • Evaluate, analyze, and problem-solve.
  • Provide guidance to staff and volunteers.
  • Prepare written reports.
  • Communicate effectively with the public and colleagues in person, online, in writing, and on the phone.
  • Speak about library materials and services to community groups of all ages.
  • Adapt to trends and changes in a field of expertise.
