DESCRIPTION
|
Under general direction plans, directs, coordinates and supervises the work of a Library Service within the County Library; trains, supervises, and evaluates staff assigned to work within the library or library service; assists in the development and implementation of Library policies, procedures, and service delivery programs and performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
Library Manager I is the first professional supervisory level in the Library Manager Series. This class is distinguished from the Library Manager II in that the Library Manager I is responsible for overseeing a library not requiring a subordinate supervisor. This class is distinguished from the Library Assistant Manager by having full responsibility for employees in professional classifications and directing programs for a library or library service on a full time basis.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|
NOTE: The following are duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.
1. Plans and directs the day-to-day operation of a library service within the County Library; selects and evaluates staff; supervises professional, paraprofessional, and/or clerical staff responsible for public or library support services; provides supervision and direction for volunteers; directs merchandising and maintenance of collections; participates in developing and updating departmental work procedures and policies; interprets and applies library policies and procedures. 2. Initiates and maintains contact with members of the community, including library support groups, schools, service organizations, County departments, and community agencies. 3. As delegated by a Library Division Director, has secondary responsibility for working with appointed citizen commissions and committees in their assigned communities. Arranges visits for members of the community to the library, speaks to organizations about library services; prepares publicity on library activities; promotes the use of the library within the community. 4. Assesses needs for staffing, supplies, resources, furnishings and equipment; submits budget requests to meet public and/or support services objectives and manages budgeted expenditures. 5. In cooperation with library service coordinators, orients and trains staff and oversees their performance; plans, evaluates, and implements service to the public, organizations, and educational institutions. 6. Manages one or more functions of a library or library service, which may include responsibility for public service and/or support service assignments; develops training programs for staff and/or the public; may serve as a project manager in the development of new services or evaluation of existing services. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
AND
Experience:
Either I
The equivalent of one (1) year full-time experience as a Library Assistant Manager in the Alameda County classified service.
Or II
The equivalent of eighteen months full-time experience as a Librarian III in the Alameda County classified service.
Or III
The equivalent of two (2) years full-time experience as a Librarian II in the Alameda County classified service.
Or IV
The equivalent of three (3) years full-time, responsible professional level library experience.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
