DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, to learn and to perform sub-professional water resources engineering work; and to perform related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The Water Resources Engineering Aide is the entry level of the Water Resources Technician series. This class provides incumbents with knowledge of hydrology and water distribution principles, basic mechanical skills, and the opportunity to obtain technical skills related to water resources engineering. Incumbents normally progress to the Water Resources Technician I class after 18 months of successful performance.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Gathers and compiles information and prepares standard reports related to supply of treated water, groundwater, surface water and rainfall.

2. Prepares, revises and updates water resources facilities and data maps; prepares base maps, standard drawings and miscellaneous charts and graphs.

3. Assists in preparing construction drawings and assembling specifications and contract documents for water resources, water supply, or flood control projects.

4. Collects samples and conducts standard water quality field tests and analyses, handling hazardous chemicals according to established procedures.

5. Monitors well levels; sets up, monitors and maintains rain gauges; takes stream flow and related measurements; prepares data for reports.

6. Assists in survey reduction, design, drafting, right-of-way engineering and mathematical computations for projects such as wells, water treatment plants, water transmission pipelines, groundwater recharge and flood control facilities.

7. Assists in inspecting project construction work for compliance with plans and specifications.

8. May assist in preparing complex reports or studies related to water supply, water resource, or flood control programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
Education:

Successful completion of high-school level courses in drafting, algebra, trigonometry and geometry.

Or II
Experience:

The equivalent of six months of recent full-time, paid experience in a sub-professional engineering position.

License:

Possession of a valid California Driver license.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of:

• Mathematics through algebra, trigonometry and geometry.
• Basic drafting practices and techniques.
• Basic engineering terminology, principles and practices.

Ability to:

• Perform sub-professional engineering duties, involving computational, clerical and manual skills.
• Read, interpret and prepare technical documents, maps and charts.
• Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
• Work harmoniously as a member of a small team.
