DESCRIPTION
|
Under general supervision, to plan, organize, coordinate the work of plant mechanics, plant maintenance laborer, electrician, instrument technician staff and construction personnel, and to perform skilled mechanical installation, maintenance and repair work of water treatment plant and field distribution system equipment and facilities; and to perform related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This is a single position classification reporting to the Facilities Maintenance and Construction Supervisor. This class is responsible for organizing, coordinating and directing the work of maintenance staff and construction personnel, and independently performs skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of pumps, motors, valves, compressors, piping systems, related water treatment and distribution equipment and facilities. This class is distinguished from the Facilities Maintenance & Construction Supervisor, in that the Facilities Maintenance & Construction Supervisor has overall responsibility for the Maintenance Section, which includes supervisory responsibility for all maintenance staff. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Place orders for parts and materials directly to the Maintenance Materials Planner Buyer in the absence of the Maintenance and Construction Supervisor. 2. Approves all parts and materials request by Maintenance employees reporting to the Lead Mechanic and forwards to Facilities Maintenance and Construction Supervisor. 3. Responsible for daily work assignments and directs the work of the Plant Mechanic, Plant Maintenance Laborer, Electrician, Instrument Technician and contractors; properly completes and turns in the paperwork associated with their work orders. 4. May be responsible for closing of work orders in the MP-2 maintenance management system. 5. Installs, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs a wide variety of mechanical equipment in treatment plants and the field distribution system, including pumps, motors, valves, compressors, chemical feed and air recovery systems, gearboxes, piping systems and related equipment; performs preventive maintenance work. 6. Designs, fabricates and installs specialized equipment for repair and modifications to plant and field distribution systems. 7. Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools, operates boom trucks and forklifts. 8. Estimates and secures materials, tools and equipment necessary to complete assigned work; contacts vendors as necessary. 9. Observes safe work methods and safety precautions to the work. 10. Maintains accurate and complete records and logs related to assignments. 11. Reads and interprets blueprints, plans, manuals and schematics. 12. Performs incidental building trades work including carpentry, painting, concrete and minor electrical work. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:
The equivalent of three years of increasingly responsible full-time experience in the maintenance of mechanical equipment components in water treatment and distribution systems. License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license. Other Requirements: Must be willing to work in exposure to potentially hazardous materials, in confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather conditions. Must possess strength sufficient to perform work assignments. Must be willing to respond to emergencies in off-hours as required. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of: • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in water treatment plant and field distribution system maintenance and repair work, including plumbing, electrical/mechanical and related building trades work. • Shop math. • Safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work. • Metal fabrication, including welding, brazing and soldering. • Principles of lead supervision. Ability to: • Plan, schedule, assign and inspect work. • Install, diagnose, repair and maintain a wide variety of mechanical equipment used in water treatment and distribution. • Plan and complete work assignments independently. • Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in the work. • Observe safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work. • Read and interpret plans, specifications, manuals and schematics. • Estimate materials, tools and equipment required to perform assignments efficiently. • Follow written and oral instructions. |
