DESCRIPTION
Under direction, assists the program staff in accepting household hazardous waste from the public at the three collection centers, load and unload waste containers, and assist staff with other hazardous waste activities; perform other duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The Hazardous Waste Workers are assigned to the Household Waste Program, Environmental Health Department, a department of the Health Care Services Agency. Positions in this class do not make decisions regarding the disposition of chemical waste; rather they follow the instructions of the professional county program staff as to how waste is to be handled. The positions in the class are under direction of the professional staff responsible for receiving and unloading waste from the public, and handling and packaging waste for transportation, loading and unloading of waste containers, and the maintenance and clean-up of the Household Waste facility. This position is distinguished from the Hazardous Materials Technician in that the latter class is responsible for assisting in the disposal evaluation, identification, and management of hazardous waste materials brought to the disposal sight.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Set-up waste receiving area and the warehouse for waste collection according to published plan.
2. Working singly or in small workgroups, safely guide vehicles into the unloading area and ensure safe conditions (typically engine off, brake set) before unloading commences.
3. Unload and rough sort HHW from vehicles, onto carts, pallets and into designated areas.
4. Respond to minor hazardous material spills during unloading.
5. Clean and maintain equipment and the facilities.
6. Bulk pre-sorted paint, solvents and motor oil into the appropriate collection container.
7. Under specific supervision, pack pre-sorted hazardous waste into pails, drums, boxes, roll off-shipping containers.
8. Load waste containers into trucks using by hand using drum dollies, and pallet jacks.
9. Unload paint and supplies from trucks by hand using drum dollies and pallet jacks.
10. Assist program staff with other hazardous waste activities (recycling paint program, swap shed, shipment).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
AND
Experience:

The equivalent of one year of full-time experience working in an industrial setting which involved the collection and disposal of household hazardous waste, shipping and receiving, and facility maintenance.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Must be medically qualified/cleared to wear a half face and full face respirator.
Must be clean shaven at all times compliant with OSHA 1910.120 specifications with respect to facial hair and respirator usage.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the "Examples of Duties" section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Basic hazardous materials handling.
• Basic knowledge of Hazardous Materials containers, drums boxes pails, opening, closing procedures.
• Basic use of hand tools, and non powered material handling equipment in conjunction with opening, sealing and moving containers.
• Fluency and literacy in written and spoken English is required.

Ability to:

• Follow standing instructions and accept responsibility.
• Exercise tact and show courtesy in frequent contacts with the public.
