DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, supports and assists with data analysis, epidemiology, and activities related to surveillance, data management, and/or program evaluation; and performs related duties as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the entry-level class in the Epidemiologist series located in the Health Care Services Agency.  Incumbents work in a training capacity, assisting and supporting higher level classes with data analysis, epidemiology, surveillance, and data management activities.  As incumbents gain experience and expertise, they are expected to perform more responsible assignments with increasing independence.  Epidemiologist Is are expected to flexibly promote to the higher-level class of Epidemiologist II after two years, with a positive performance evaluation and successful demonstration of proficiency to perform the duties of the higher level classification.

The class of Epidemiologist I is distinguished from the higher, journey level class of Epidemiologist II in that the latter is responsible for conducting data analysis and activities related to surveillance, epidemiologic investigations, and/or program evaluation under general supervision.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1.  Assists with the cleaning, processing, and analysis of surveillance and other data sources to identify patterns and trends in health outcomes in the community.

2.  Assists with the design of data collection tools and with data collection and analysis for epidemiological or population health investigations.

3.  Conducts data analysis for data requests as needed.

4.  Assists with summarizing data analysis results and assists with preparing presentations, reports, and publications for a variety of audiences.

5.  Assists with developing, monitoring, and evaluating public health programs or disease surveillance protocols.

6.  Retrieves data from appropriate data systems for disease investigations, surveillance, or health status reports.

7.  Assists with development and management of databases for surveys, disease surveillance, or research studies.

8.  May serve as a liaison for assigned program with representatives of other government agencies and community groups.

9.  Participates in public health emergency responses and provides epidemiologic input for public health emergency planning and response as needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in epidemiology, bio-statistics, public health, life science, social/behavioral sciences or another closely related field.

AND

Experience:

The equivalent of two years of full-time, professional level epidemiology experience, preferably in a public health, health care delivery, or academic institution setting.

 

Substitution:

Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in epidemiology, bio-statistics, social/behavior sciences or another closely related field can be substituted for the required experience.

 

License:

Specified positions may required possession of a valid California driver's license.

 

NOTE:  The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
