DESCRIPTION
|
Under general direction, to plan, administer, coordinate and evaluate the work of a major functional section within a division of the Probation Department, such as Adult or Juvenile Investigation, Adult Supervision, Juvenile Placement or Adult pre-sentence investigations; to maintain work standards, case controls, and work output; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This class represents the second level of supervision and is distinguished from the next lower level class of Unit Supervisor by the increased span of control or the increased complexity or sensitivity of the major function supervised. Incumbents report directly to a Division Director. Positions in the next higher class of Division Director are responsible for major functional divisions within the department. This classification is found in the Probation Department only. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Plans, directs, and coordinates the work of several units of Probation Officers and other personnel engaged in administering probation services; confers with subordinate supervisors on organizational problems, such as caseload distribution, personnel problems, performance evaluation, and technical problems related to law or regulation. 2. Assists a Division Director in formulating division policies and procedures and in setting work standards; confers with superiors on personnel problems and policy matters, may substitute for Division Director in his/her absence. 3. Directly evaluates the performance of immediate subordinates and indirectly evaluates the performance of line workers under their supervision; approves or disapproves of granting permanent status to new employees of assigned units and may recommend dismissal of any unsatisfactory employee in an assigned unit. 4. Represents the Probation Department at various hearings, conferences and institutes, community councils and other community agencies; coordinates Probation Department activities with other agencies. 5. Interprets laws and regulations to first-line supervisors and to the public; addresses community groups on topics in particular field of specialty. 6. May assist in the Probation Department training program; give lectures and train new workers in agency procedures and appropriate techniques. 7. Reviews and approves actions on sensitive cases involving matters which may be contested or which involve other agencies or departments. 8. Reviews, approves, and forwards periodic reports relating to caseload status and activity and personnel. Assists in providing statistics to justify County budget requests. 9. Attends and holds staff meetings and conferences to discuss training problems, evaluation of performance, transfer of employees, morale and personnel problems, and to inform staff of new policies and procedures, and to ensure conformity with departmental and County regulations. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
The equivalent of six years’ full-time experience in the Alameda County Probation Department at the level of Institutional Supervisor II or in an equivalent or higher level Probation classification in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) (Possession of baccalaureate degree may be substituted for the equivalent of four years’ experience). Or II The equivalent of six years’ full-time, increasingly responsible administrative or management experience, including the supervision of personnel and the implementation of broad and complex programs comparable to that of Unit Supervisor or Institutional Supervisor (Institutional Supervisor II) or equivalent or higher level classification in a Probation, Parole, Correctional Institution, etc. (Possession of a baccalaureate degree may be substituted for the equivalent of four years of experience). License: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle operator's license. Special Requirements: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Possession of an automobile may be required. Good driving record according to DMV negligent operator guidelines and qualification for automotive insurance. State law requires that persons appointed to positions in this classification be citizens of the United States or must have filed for citizenship one year prior to employment application deadline date and must meet all other minimum requirements for Peace Officer status (Section 1031 Government Code). Any felony conviction is disqualifying. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
