DESCRIPTION

Under general direction of the Chief Probation Officer, the Probation Project Coordinator will assist the department in meeting enhanced departmental goals. This position will be responsible for establishing and enhancing the connection between the department, its facilities, and the community and law enforcement agencies and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This is a single position classification found in the Probation Department. The incumbent will report directly to the Chief Probation Officer and will implement departmental projects and programs that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Probation Department’s interagency relationships and probation outcomes. This position functions as a member of the senior management team to provide accurate, comprehensive and timely information and recommendations regarding interagency relations upon which final administrative decisions will be made. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Acts as liaison between the Probation Department and various law enforcement agencies by meeting with representatives from various local, state and national agencies and criminal justice personnel to enhance the Probation Departments in the rehabilitation of adults and youth within our community. 2. Prepares written, statistical and narrative reports regarding his/her oversight of projects or programs at the direction of the Chief Probation Officer. 3. Participates in the design, planning and implementation of community collaboration and outreach efforts. 4. Develops a positive working relationship with local media, i.e., television, radio and print. 5. Assists with the Community Grant Process, obtaining collaborative grant approvals, implementing and monitoring for results. 6. Supervises staff when necessary. 7. Performs other duties as required. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in sociology, counseling, public administration or closely related field. And Experience: The equivalent of four years full-time experience in community outreach/coordination; one year of which must be full-time management/supervisory experience working with high-risk adults and/or youth in probation/law enforcement. Special Requirements: Persons appointed must meet the minimum requirements for Peace Officers (per section 1031 of the Government Code) which include successful completion of a thorough background security investigation before being appointed to the position. Persons appointed must also: • Be at least 18 years of age. • Be a U. S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship. • Have a U. S. high school diploma, GED certificate, or high school equivalency certificate, or a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited or approved college/university. • Be free of any felony conviction or certain misdemeanor convictions that are disqualifying. • Be free of any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |

Knowledge of: • All aspects of probation administration including appropriate methods, procedures, and technical expertise. • Principles, methods and techniques of administration, including the organization and management of modern probation services and institutional administration. • Forces and trends relating to crime, delinquency and social adjustment. • Community organizations and resources. • Computer software such as MS Office, including word processing, spreadsheets, data bases and PowerPoint. Ability to: • Communicate effectively orally and in writing. • Work cooperatively with varying interests and coordinate with them towards achieving strategic plans and solving problems. • Work effectively with law enforcement and a variety of internal and external agencies. • Analyze situations quickly and accurately and develop practical solutions. • To exercise appropriate independent judgment and initiative. • Prepare statistical, narrative and oral reports. • Measure and evaluate programs and policies and make recommendations accordingly. • Develop and maintain effective professional relationships. • Ability to plan and supervise the implementation of departmental initiatives. • Ability to plan and supervise the work of professional and administrative staff. • Promote cooperative joint efforts among divergent groups. |
