DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, to be responsible for the care and custody of juveniles detained in one of several County facilities during the night shift (i.e., 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., etc.); and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Positions in this class are found in Juvenile Hall, Chabot Girls' and Boys' Unit, and Los Cerros of the Probation Department and Snedigar Cottage of the Social Services Agency. Incumbents exercise a care and custodial function over a unit dormitory and/or individual rooms on the night shift but do not engage in regular counseling. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Checks the security and safety of the facility; examines locks, inspects windows/screens, keeps count of the group in the unit/individual rooms at least once every hour; and be alert for any unusual noise, activity, behavior, etc. 2. Observes minors/detainees at all times to prevent them from injuring themselves and others; keeps order and silence; administers appropriate discipline, and if necessary, applies physical restraints. 3. Secures proper medical attention for minors/detainees and dispenses prescribed medication as directed by medical personnel. 4. Admits and releases minors/detainees to and from the unit/individual rooms with proper precautions; allows only appropriate clothing into the unit/room, and searches for contraband or weapons. 5. Assists in the receiving and the releasing of minors/detainees, providing orientation to new minors/detainees; obtains proper bedding and clothing and supervises personal hygiene. 6. Transports or arranges for transportation of the minors/detainees because of a medical or discipline problem. 7. As required, may complete reports on discipline, runaways, incidents, prepares observation/progress reports; keeps unit log up to date. 8. May provide relief for staff members in another facility and secures intermittent coverage for a.m. shift on emergency basis. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
Experience: The equivalent of one year of full-time experience involving the organization, direction, or supervision of youth groups in a recreational or correctional setting. Or II Education: A minimum of ten college- or university-level courses which may be expected to provide knowledge and skills required for this position. These courses must be equal to or greater than 30 semester units or 45 quarter units successfully completed. Preferred College Coursework: 2 courses in English (designed to improve writing skills) 2 courses in psychology 2 courses in sociology 2 courses in cultural anthropology, ethnic studies or similar courses 2 courses in criminology License: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license. Special Requirement: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. A good driving record according to DMV negligent operator guidelines and qualifications for automotive insurance. Persons appointed to positions in this classification in the Probation Department must meet the minimum standards for Peace Officer (Sec. 1031 Government Code), which includes being a citizen of the U.S. Any felony conviction is disqualifying for positions in the Probation Department. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
