DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, to provide child care at Snedigar Cottage, a County Welfare Department institution for the care and custody of neglected and abused children; to supervise children's play and living activities, teaching them proper health and social habits; to perform housekeeping duties; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Child Care Worker I supervises and cares for a group of children in the 6-8 year old living unit at Snedigar Cottage. They are scheduled for assignments by the Assistant Director, Snedigar Cottage, or Supervising Child Care Workers. They are distinguished from Child Care Worker II’s in that the former are responsible for 6-8 year olds whereas the latter are responsible for 8-18 year olds. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Reads log book and medical treatment book to note unusual occurrences or special instructions and makes entries in log regarding occurrences on their shift. 2. Cares for a group of children, organizes play and singing, reads books, tells stories, serves meals to children, oversees their eating, dressing, sleeping, and bathing, assisting them when necessary; teaches and encourages the formation of good health and social habit patterns; helps emotionally and mentally disturbed children adjust to the cottage; is sympathetic to children's problems and maintains a firm but fair discipline. 3. Observes children's state of health; watches out for a sickness; especially contagious diseases; gives medications or treatment as ordered; sterilizes equipment; makes observations on children's behavior; refers observations of erratic behavior to Supervising Child Care Workers. 4. Washes children's clothes and diapers, using washing machine and dryer; sweeps, mops, and performs miscellaneous housekeeping tasks. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
|
Experience:
The equivalent of six months of experience in child care as a teacher or nurse or in a similar capacity in a child care center, nursery school or similar facility. Or II Some acceptable combination of education and appropriate experience. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
