DESCRIPTION
Under direction, assist in the administration and management of Medical Social Work staff in the Alameda County’s Health Care Services Agency; recruits, orients, trains, supervises, and evaluates the work of medical social workers; works in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team; provides clinical oversight to support medical social workers; and performs other related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Medical Social Work Supervisors are first-line supervisors in the medical social worker series and report to clinical or program managers that provide oversight of clinical services, policy interpretation, and guidance. Incumbents assist in the planning, administration, and evaluation of medical social services within Alameda County Health Care Services Agency.  The primary duties of this class are to supervise, direct and review the work performance of medical social workers.  The nature of such work requires the supervisor to be especially well trained and possess a considerable degree of clinical skill in the medical social treatment process and program planning.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Directs and reviews the work of medical social workers; assists in setting work standards and ensures that case recording and medical social work standards are maintained; interprets work standards, departmental policy and procedures, and guides workers in making difficult case decisions and determinations; evaluates workers' performance and prepares performance evaluations.
  2. Confers with key staff on specific case problems and receives instructions regarding policy and procedure changes, including department changes.
  3. Holds regular casework conferences with each worker and the medical social worker team; reviews and studies casework records and selects cases for discussion; acts as a clinical consultant regarding case management issues guides medical social workers in diagnosing social, psychological, and financial disorders; guides workers in developing and modifying casework treatment plans; assesses the progress of casework treatment and recommends alternative plans, termination of treatment, etc.; assists worker in clarifying his/her personal feelings in difficult cases.
  4. Participates in special projects and community planning activities, as assigned; attends local conferences and meetings as the department representative; helps develop and coordinate new medical community services and/or revise current services.
  5. Provides intensive case service to selected cases; develops and carries out treatment plans; obtains consultation from interdisciplinary team as needed; prepares case reports and summaries.
  6. Provides consultation as needed to the interdisciplinary team regarding clinical interventions for public health clients regarding social work and social service interventions.
  7. Develops training programs for medical social work staff, community-based organizations, and other health professionals; assists in orientation programs for student nurses; prepares reports on their progress.
  8. Prepares workload reports and summaries; keeps required statistics; assists in departmental studies and projects as assigned.
  9. May perform other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER I
Experience:

The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time experience as a Medical Social Worker II in the Alameda County classified service.

OR II
Education:

Possession of a master's degree in Social Work or Social Behavioral Science awarded by an accredited college or university (accredited college or university means one which is eligible for membership in the American Association of Schools of Social Work or accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education).

AND
Experience:

The equivalent of three (3) years of full-time post-graduate work experience as a medical social worker in a hospital or public health department, one (1) year of which must have been in a lead/supervisory capacity.

License:

Possession of a valid clinical license from applicable licensing authority: California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Certain positions may require possession of a California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above minimum qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
