DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, to assist in providing community-based crisis intervention services for children and adult populations with mental health and/or substance abuse diagnoses which includes direct client contact in the community, crisis intervention, gather information for field clinical assessments, outreach services, and other related duties as assigned.  Work is performed seven days a week and assignment locations may vary in order to best serve the community.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Associate is the entry level position in the Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention class series.  The Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Associate is expected to work in conjunction with the Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Specialist I/II performing community-based crisis intervention services with a focus on counseling, outreach, community engagement, mental health education, assessment and referral.

This class is distinguished from the Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Specialists in that the latter is a licensed or registered clinician and provides professional crisis services on mobile crisis and mobile evaluation teams.  Positions in this class series are located in Behavioral Health Care Services' Crisis Services, which provides community based crisis prevention and early intervention services to clients and the community.  Incumbents will report to a Behavioral health Crisis Intervention Specialist Supervisor.

Incumbents are expected to gain experience and demonstrate proficiency, which qualifies them to flexibly promote to the higher level class after two years of full-time experience and possession of the required State licensure from the applicable licensing authority.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE:  The following are duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.


1.  Provides crisis counseling, evaluation and gather assessment information of individuals experiencing a mental health crisis in the community.

2.  Makes arrangements for voluntary or involuntary hospitalization to, or diversion from, acute mental health setting and provides information, referrals and mental health education services to individuals and families.

3.  Participates as part of the Multidisciplinary Forensic Team, and periodically, co-facilitates meetings with community providers, including but not limited to, police, Probation Department, Behavioral Health Care Services Department, and other outreach and homeless programs focused on connecting individuals to mental health services.

4.  Makes regular community visits to homes, shelters, homeless encampments, etc., to meet with those in need of mental health treatment, but are unwilling or unable to voluntarily participate in treatment.  Provides short-term case management services as appropriate, and makes direct referrals to other community services.

5.  Participates in a variety of community meetings as needed with the goal of collaborating with, gathering information from, and referring individuals to a wide varieties of services.

6.  Maintains all records and documentation on interventions in accordance with the Quality Assurance standards of Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services.

7.  Attends staff conference, training sessions, and case conferences.

8.  May serve as a liaison to other community agencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

Experience:

Equivalent to two years' experience in the class of Mental Health Specialist III in the Alameda County classified service.

Or II
Experience:

The Equivalent of four years full-time experience providing community based clinical and/or crisis intervention services.  Possession of a Master's degree from an accredited school in social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, counseling, nursing, or related field, may substitute for two years' experience.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.  Applicants must possess such license prior to appointment to such positions.

Special Requirements:

In compliance with the Administrative Simplification provision of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), employees in the classification are required to possess a national Provider Identifier (NPI) number prior tot heir first day on the job.
