DESCRIPTION
Under instruction and close supervision, to learn skills in grounds maintenance, janitorial building security and other related areas; and to perform other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The purpose of this class is to provide employment opportunities in the Public Works Agency for candidates with little or no prior work experience. Incumbents will receive training in one of several areas that will give them work experience necessary to qualify for the examination of the class being trained in. This class differs from the next higher level class Public Works Aide II in that it trains for classes requiring a lessor degree of work skills. Incumbents may promote to the regular class being trained for or to Public Works Aide II and the subsequent higher level classes.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Assists in sweeping, dusting, mopping, waxing, cleaning, sanitizing, and equipping office, halls, meeting rooms and rest rooms.

2. Assists in patrolling grounds, making rounds of buildings, checking for fires or fire hazards, building security, checking improperly functioning equipment, parking cars, and operating a small fire truck in emergencies.

3. Assists in cutting lawns, spading and hoeing around plants, shrubs and trees; watering lawns, plants, trees and shrubs; cleaning up of brush and other debris; cleaning and oiling of tools; and the planting of flowers, shrubs and trees.

4. Assists in performance of sub-professional field and office work.

5. Assists in performance of less technical work of skilled crafts and tradesmen.

6. Assists in the performance of heavy manual tasks in the maintenance of roads and bridges, flood control facilities and County buildings.

7. Assists in servicing automotive vehicles, including filing gas tanks, cleaning windshields, checking and changing oil, and repairing tires.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to read and write English.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
