DESCRIPTION

Under instruction and close supervision, to learn skills in the classes of Laborer, Engineering Aide and other related fields; and to perform related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The purpose of this class is to provide employment opportunities for persons with limited work experience and for Public Works Aide I’s being trained in one of the areas covered by this class. Incumbents will receive training in one of several areas that will give them the work experience necessary to qualify for the examination of the class for which they are being trained. The incumbents also may be required, during the employment, to take certain educational courses or participate in training programs at local schools or colleges.

This class differs from the next lower level position of Public Works Aide I in that it provides training for classes requiring a higher level of skills, experience, ability and/or education.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Assists in making simple routine computations in connection with field or office work, drafting, or filing of maps and drawings.

2. Assists in simple or routine laboratory testing of soils and construction materials.

3. Assists in the performance of heavy manual tasks in the maintenance of roads and bridges, flood control facilities, and County buildings.

4. Assists in the servicing of construction vehicles and equipment.

5. Assists in the performance of the less technical work of skills crafts and tradesmen.

6. Assists in the performance of sub-professional field and office work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

Experience:

The equivalent of six months of full-time experience as a Public Works Aide I in the Alameda County classified service (non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts) (with departmental approval).

Or II

The equivalent of six months of full-time experience in sub-professional engineering work, construction vehicles and equipment service work, maintenance, manual labor or a related field.

License:

Must possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle License.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the "Examples of Duties" section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

· Common tools, materials, equipment and methods used in the related work.
· Mathematics used in sub-professional engineering work.
· Engineering drafting materials, techniques and instruments.

Abilities:

· Following oral and written instructions.
· Performing various sub-professional engineering duties involving computational, clerical, and manual skills.
· Performing extensive physical work in all kinds of weather.
· Driving a passenger vehicle with skill and safety.
· Performing tasks without continuous supervision.
