DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to clean a small building or an assigned area in a large building, and to perform related duties.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES The class of Janitor is distinguished from the next higher class of Lead Janitor in that the latter class not only performs janitorial work, but also has lead responsibility for a group of Janitors. The class of Janitor is distinguished from Janitor-Floor Specialist, in that the latter is primarily assigned to maintain the floors in County buildings. Janitors must be able to work independently as their work is not subject to continuous supervision, rather it is inspected upon completion or while in progress. Also, Janitors may be assigned to work a variety of shifts and locations within the County. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed. 1. Sweeps, mops, vacuums floors, dusts, washes walls using pressure washers; dusts and polishes wood surfaces; polishes metal fixtures; dusts books and files and cleans window coverings. 2. Cleans stairs, stairwells and entranceways to the curb. Pressure washes patios, stairs, entranceways and balconies, rakes litter in parking lot and cleans walk off mats. 3. Cleans and disinfects washrooms and keeps them well stocked; uses various cleaning agents to wash walls, fixtures and inside windows; requests or orders adequate supplies to complete work. 4. Turns out lights and leaves area ready for occupancy; replaces light bulbs and occasionally uses ladders of various heights; empties waste baskets and disposes of trash; picks up recycling. 5. Moves furniture and office equipment setting room in order; is assigned general security of the building in which they work. Arranges and rearranges office space, conference rooms, training centers and auditoriums. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:
The equivalent of six months’ full-time janitorial experience in offices or an institution. License: Some positions may require a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. Special Requirement: Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of: • Modern janitorial methods, materials and equipment, soaps, detergents, disinfectants, cleaning compounds, extractors, and pressure washers. Ability to: • Communicate both orally and in writing. • Understand and follow instructions. • Perform repetitive tasks without continuous supervision. • Work effectively with a wide variety of people. • Correctly and safely use janitorial materials, products and equipment. • Lift up to 50 pounds. • Learn basic computer skills. |
