DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, strips, waxes, refinishes and shampoos various types of floors in an assigned area; may also be assigned to general janitorial duties; and, performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

All janitorial staff perform routine vacuuming, sweeping and mopping, however, the specialized, journey-level class of Janitor, Floor Specialist differs from the Janitor classification because of the former’s specialization in floor care. Incumbents may be required to travel between assigned locations and secure the facility at the end of their shift.

The class of Janitor, Floor Specialist is distinguished from Lead Janitor in that the latter class has lead responsibility for a group of Janitors in addition to performing janitorial work.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1.  Strips, waxes and refinishes hard surfaces; cleans carpets and upholstered surfaces; sweeps and mops.

2.  Operates powered floor cleaning equipment including, but not limited to: low speed buffers, high speed buffers, carpet extractors, bonnet machines, wet/dry vacuum, vacuum cleaners, air blowers, and ride on equipment.

3.  Moves heavy furniture and lifts powered floor cleaning equipment.

4.  Mixes and applies floor cleaning chemicals on necessary surfaces.

5.  Cleans grout in bathrooms.

6.  May demonstrate proper floor care to incumbents of the Janitorial classification .

7.  Dusts and polishes wood surfaces and metal fixtures; dusts books and files and cleans window coverings.

8.  Cleans stairs, stairwells and entranceways to the curb; pressure washes patios, stairs, entranceways and balconies, rakes litter in parking lot and cleans walk off mats.

9.  Cleans and disinfects washrooms and keeps them well stocked; uses various cleaning agents to wash walls, fixtures and inside windows; requests or orders adequate supplies to complete work.

10. Turns out lights and leaves area ready for occupancy; and occasionally uses ladders of various heights; empties waste baskets and disposes of trash; picks up recycling.

11. Moves furniture and office equipment setting room in order; is assigned general security of the building in which they work. Arranges and rearranges office space, conference rooms, training centers and auditoriums.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:
The equivalent of six months of full-time janitorial experience in offices or an institution and completion of floor care training.

OR

Experience:
The equivalent of six months of direct floor care experience that included carpet, tile or finished concrete.

License:
A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

Special Requirement:
May be required to obtain and maintain security clearance.

May be assigned to work day, evening, night and rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

  • Modern janitorial methods, materials and equipment, including the proper use of power-driven waxing and buffing machines, soaps, detergents, disinfectants, cleaning compounds, extractors, carpet machines and pressure washers.
  • Safety practices and procedures related to floor care.

Ability to:

  • Communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Perform repetitive tasks without continuous supervision.
  • Prioritize.
  • Work effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Correctly and safely use janitorial materials, products and equipment.
  • Lift and move items up to 50 pounds.
  • Learn basic computer skills.
  • Work with limited or no on-site supervision
