DESCRIPTION
Under direction, to perform janitorial duties in and to be responsible for the overall condition and proper use of a County building and its facilities; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Custodians, whose work is subject to infrequent inspection, perform janitorial duties in County buildings, the facilities of which are used continuously by the general public. Positions in this class may be distinguished from Janitors in that they are assigned responsibility for the general security of the building in which they work and have considerable contact with the public in explaining the facilities available in the building and in safeguarding their proper use. The completion of cleaning work is made more difficult by the necessity of planning and performing such work around the activities that are taking place during much of the time the incumbent is on duty.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Opens and closes the building to public use.

2. Sets up furniture in and prepares rooms and halls for social functions.

3. Helps make reservations for rooms and halls, referring to log book showing reservations outstanding.

4. Sweeps, mops, dusts, and waxes floors, frequently using power equipment; and vacuum cleans rugs.

5. Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork.

6. Maintains comfortable temperatures throughout the building, cleaning tubes and filters on oil burners if necessary.

7. Washes inside windows and occasionally outside windows.

8. Cleans and disinfects washrooms and keeps them supplied.

9. Requisitions supplies needed to carry out the above duties.

10. Answers the telephone and gives information regarding building facilities and use.

11. Delivers mail to offices in the building.

12. Occasionally does some outside work, such as cutting grass and trimming hedges.

13. When assigned as Custodian in the County Morgue, admits authorized persons to the morgue; answers phone and gives out information on cause of death to the press, and assists Deputy Coroners in photographing and fingerprinting bodies.
