DESCRIPTION
Under general direction, performs community outreach and public education activities related to fire/life safety and emergency preparedness; provides clerical and paraprofessional administrative support in the development, maintenance, coordination, and delivery of public education and community relations information; and performs related duties as assigned.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Positions in this classification are located in the Alameda County Fire Department and report to the Fire Public Information and Community Relations Officer and/or the Fire Emergency Preparedness Manager. This classification performs community outreach activities in the delivery of educational programs to promote fire/life safety and emergency preparedness, and provides a variety of clerical/administrative support. The Fire Public Education Assistant is distinguished from the Public Information and Community Relations Officer in that the latter plans, coordinates, and administers the district-wide Public Information and Community Engagement Program for the Alameda County Fire Department. This classification is also distinguished from the Fire CERT Program Coordinator in that the latter coordinates the community emergency preparedness programs (e.g., personal emergency preparedness, community emergency response team, and get ready fifth grade).

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Provides clerical and para-professional administrative support to the Fire Public Information and Community Relations Officer/Fire Emergency Preparedness Manager.

2. Performs community outreach and public education activities at various community events; provides fire/life safety and emergency preparedness information to schools, community groups, volunteers, and the public.

3. Participates and represents Alameda County Fire Department at community events.

4. Provides clerical/administrative support in the coordination, development, and design of presentations and demonstrations on fire/life safety and emergency preparedness education and special related projects/programs.

5. Researches and gathers information and data from various resources; and summarizes data and prepares narrative reports.

6. Assists in the coordination of additional resources for community relations programs, events and projects.

7. Maintains various records, including but not limited to station tours, ridealongs, engine visits, and community presentations.

8. Assists in scheduling events, presentations, tours and visits.

9. Assists professional staff in updating and reviewing curricula for community fire/life safety and emergency preparedness presentations, trainings and workshops.

10. Conducts fire and life safety and emergency preparedness presentations and trainings.

11. May coordinate the activities of program volunteers and Fire Department Aides, when assigned to community outreach and public information/emergency preparedness duties.

12. Assists in the preparation of letters, memos and other written materials; may enter information into and access multiple databases or use information from various sources to prepare such materials.

13. Tests training equipment to ensure it operates properly and contacts vendors to address any problems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Possession of an Associate’s degree from an accredited college.

Or
Experience:

The equivalent of one year full-time experience performing community outreach activities and/or clerical/administrative support.

(Additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.)

And

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License

Special Requirement:

Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
