DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, performs complex and technical payroll-related duties involving the preparation and maintenance of Fire Department employee payroll system and payroll-related personnel records; responds to payroll and benefits inquiries from Fire Department Management and other staff in support of the payroll processing function; and to performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The Fire Department Payroll Processor is a paraprofessional non-safety classification within the Alameda County Fire Department.  This single confidential clerical is responsible for the preparation of payroll, maintenance of payroll documentation and files, and preparation of State and Federal payroll tax reports.  This classification is distinguished from the Fire Department Payroll Analyst, in that the Payroll Processor has payroll processing and payroll file maintenance responsibilities, whereas the Fire Department Payroll Analyst has payroll coordination and responsibilities in the payroll unit.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each employee in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Prepares and processes the Fire Department’s payroll.
  2. Compute and prepare adjustments and special payroll checks; adjust tax balances for canceled payroll checks.
  3. Ensure timely and accurate posting and maintenance of payroll-related data, and audit preliminary payroll reports for reasonableness and accuracy.
  4. Ensures compliance with County, State, and Federal requirements related to payroll processes and reports.
  5. Maintain and prepare payroll-related records and reports to assist with various management-based projects.
  6. Conduct new employee orientation and process new employee documentation related to payroll and payroll programs.
  7.  Answer payroll-related questions from employees.
  8. Assist with the administration of the Fire Department’s compensation plans.
  9. Prepare Quarterly and Yearly reports to Federal and State Agencies. Research and resolves a variety of problems related to assigned activity and process retirement plan contributions.
  10. Research and resolve discrepancies or problems with a variety of vendors and governmental agencies and implement provisions and associated changes in employee bargaining agreements on the payroll system.
  11. Coordinate with outside vendors in preparation of required Federal and State reports.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in the preparation and maintenance of financial, fiscal, and other statistical records or two (2) years in processing and maintenance of payroll data.  Payroll experience is desirable.

License

May require possession of a valid California driver's license.
