DESCRIPTION

Under general direction, this single position class is responsible to plan, coordinate, supervise, and direct the field and shelter animal services activities; to enforce animal control laws and ordinances in unincorporated areas of the County and in those incorporated areas which contract with the County for animal control service; and do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Animal Services Supervisor is located in the Animal Services Section of the Sheriff's Office Field Services Unit. This position has first-line supervision responsibilities within the Animal Services Section and reports to a Lieutenant who is responsible for the overall activities in the Field Services Unit. Animal Services Supervisor is distinguished from the next lower class of Sheriff's Technician, working in Animal Services, in that the latter is responsible for animal control investigation and field work. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Directs, supervises, trains, evaluates, schedules, and coordinates activities of employees engaged in shelter operations and field operations. 2. Advises staff concerning quarantine measures and other laws and ordinances governing animals for dissemination to the public. 3. Responds to citizens' complaints regarding employees and operational procedures, investigates and writes reports on complaints, and makes recommendations to superiors for disposition. 4. Reviews animal control communications and reports and oversees equipment; prepares and administers the annual budget relating to shelter operations and field services; and maintains and submits records on animal control activities. 5. Assigns and directs daily activities including investigation of complaints and biting animals, patrol, enforcement of State and local laws regarding animal control, feeding, care, adoption, placement, quarantine, euthanasia and disposal of animals held at the shelter, collection of fees, and shelter operation and maintenance. 6. Responsible for overseeing the performance of veterinarians for contract compliance purposes. 7. Reviews and submits reports concerning County ordinances and other codes related to animals. 8. Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers enrolled in shelter activities. 9. Qualifies for the use of animal tranquilizer weapons; instructs subordinates in their use. 10. Develops and directs the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the Animal Services Section. 11. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with other jurisdictions and agencies. |
