DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, performs duties related to the technical assistance, coordination, scheduling, repairing and compliance with National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 1851- Standard, Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Structural Fire Fighting Protective Ensembles; acts as the Alameda County Fire Department (ACFD) liaison with independent service providers to ensure proper repair procedures are followed; and performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is a single classification in the ACFD and reports to the Battalion Chief who oversees the PPE program. This position is typically characterized by the following elements:

• The need for technical knowledge in the service delivery area to which assigned
• Ensure compliance with NFPA 1851 standard

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Prepares firefighter ensemble element for cleaning, inspection and repair(s).

2. Tracks and records the cleaning, inspection, and repairs of firefighting ensemble elements.

3. Performs routine maintenance and repairs to extractor equipment and other related equipment.

4. Conducts training of ACFD department personnel in conducting routine cleaning, advance cleaning and routine inspection of ensemble elements.

5. Performs patching of minor tears, char marks, and ember burns to a separable outer shell, repairing of skipped, broken, and missing stitches to a separable outer shell, replacement of missing hardware, excluding positive closure systems to a separable outer shell, reclosing of the liner of a garment after inspection per manufacturer-approved methods.

6. Monitors the work of verified independent service provider/contractors engaged in performing preventive maintenance and ensures they have required materials to complete tasks; escorts, assigned staff or contractors through facilities, communicates project requirements, monitors performance of work including review of completed project and ensures compliance/completeness.

7. Performs the full range of supply, storeroom or warehouse duties, including receiving and delivering of supplies/equipment for any designated location in the County.

8. Updates PPE Program Manager of program effectiveness and related issues.

9. Participates in estimating costs and supplies to be used for scheduled maintenance activities. May be required to make recommendations regarding maintenance and cost savings measures related to maintenance and repairs.

10. Prepares and reviews requests for proposals and quotes for services, products or equipment; makes recommendations accordingly.

11. Reviews manufacturers service manuals and records maintenance problems in order to determine optimum frequency of preventive maintenance activities.

12. Assists in analyzing standards/regulations and related changes to determine departmental impact.

13. Prepares a variety of correspondence, reports and other written materials.

14. Operates a variety of standard office equipment including a word processor and/or computer.

15. Operates a department issued vehicle for the purposes of transporting equipment or personnel, equipment and tools, or ACFD property and for use during the performance of maintenance and repair work, purchases and deliveries of either equipment or supplies for routine and/or special projects.

16. Ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures and observes safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work and performs assignments in compliance with safety regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate such as the General Education Development Certificate (G.E.D).

AND
Experience:

One year full time experience in coordinating, scheduling, repairing and ensuring compliance with NFPA 1851- Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting.

License:

Possession of a valid California Class-C Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Certificate:

Individuals must successfully complete an element manufacturer certification training upon employment.
