DESCRIPTION

Under general direction, to supervise and coordinate the work of the Weights and Measures Division of the Community Development Agency, and to act for the Chief Deputy Sealer in his/her absence on weights and measures issues, and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES The Deputy Sealer reports to the Chief Deputy Sealer, and works as a full-time assistant to the Chief Deputy Sealer. The Deputy Sealer is responsible for the day-to-day guidance and direction of operating personnel in the Weights and Measures Division of the Community Development Agency, as well as assisting with the development of weights and measures policies, procedures, and programs. The incumbent provides staff assistance to the Chief Deputy Sealer on budgetary and research matters and serves as the Division’s training officer. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Plans, supervises and coordinates the work of the division, and acts in the Chief Deputy Sealer’s absence. 2. Coordinates and evaluates staff in the inspection and testing of weighing and measuring devices, quantity control inspections and petroleum product quality assurance. 3. Assists in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures, budget preparation and in the evaluation of workload statistics. 4. Supervises the investigation of complaints, gathering of evidence and preparation of cases for hearings or trials, and may appear as a witness in litigation cases. 5. Cooperates with County, State and Federal personnel on law enforcement and program development activities. 6. Supervises the care, use and maintenance of division standards and equipment. 7. Provides in-service training to employees and encourages safe working practices in the performance of inspections and tests. 8. Speaks before interested groups regarding the Weights and Measures Division. 9. Prepares reports, correspondence and responsible for the maintenance of records. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
The equivalent of one year in the class of Senior Weights and Measures Inspector or equivalent or higher level in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) Or II Education: Possession of a Bachelors’ degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in the physical sciences or related fields, And Experience: The equivalent of three years of full-time experience in weights and measures work, including at least one year of supervisory or administrative experience over weights and measures activities. Certificates and Licenses: Possession of the Deputy County Sealer certificate issued by the State of California. Valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. NOTE: Class A California State Commercial Driver’s License may be required at the discretion of the Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
