Under general direction, to provide aviation support to the Alameda County Narcotics Task Force.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES The Alameda County Narcotics Task Force (ACNTF) Chief Pilot is a single position classification located in the Sheriff’s Office. The ACNTF Chief Pilot reports to the Law Enforcement Services Division Commander and is responsible for coordinating the use of aircraft and aviation personnel to meet the needs of the Narcotics Task Force and the Sheriff’s Office. The incumbent supervises and coordinates the work of contracted pilots. In addition, the incumbent flies missions for the ACNTF and the Sheriff’s Office. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Performs the duties of pilot-in-command for ACNTF and Sheriff’s Office missions. 2. Conducts ground and flight training for contract pilots and designated ACNTF observers; conducts annual ground and flight evaluations of contract pilot proficiency in general and instrument flight procedures; maintains contract pilot files. 3. Schedules pilots for ACNTF and Sheriff’s Office missions, including pilot-in-command and second-in-command; coordinates with ACNTF and Sheriff’s Office management and supervisors for the use of aircraft and aviation personnel for the completion of missions. 4. Conducts recruitment, selection and training of contract pilots. Supervises and coordinates the scheduling of pilots; works with other County departments to develop, renew and sustain pilot contracts. 5. Monitors aircraft logbooks, applicable airworthiness directives, service bulletins and service advisories to schedule the appropriate maintenance when needed; responsible for monthly and yearly reports. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:
Must have logged a minimum of 1500 hours total time, including 800 as pilot-in-command AND have logged a minimum of 50 hours in a Cessna 206 aircraft, License: • Possession of a Commercial Pilot certificate and Instrument Flight Instructor Certificate • Must possess and maintain a current FAA Class II medical certificate. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of: • State and Federal laws pertaining to the use of aircraft. • Regulations of the Department of Transportation and the FAA. • Airborne Law Enforcement Operations, including surveillance techniques, piloting skills, navigation, safety and maintenance. Ability to: • Fly aircraft safely. • Conduct tactical and administrative law enforcement flight operations during the day or night over all types of terrain, in all types of weather, and in all types of airspace. • Plan, assign, evaluate and supervise the work and operations of the flight staff. • Train and instruct all levels of pilots. • Assimilate generally accepted law enforcement techniques, procedures and methodologies. • Work effectively and efficiently with co-pilot, other departmental personnel, and other law enforcement and government agencies. • Exercise good judgment in emergency and stressful situations. • Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing. |
