DESCRIPTION

Deputy Sheriff – Services-As-Needed (SAN), under general supervision, provides limited law enforcement services within the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office on a services-as-needed basis; and performs other related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The classification of Deputy Sheriff – (SAN) is used on a services-as-needed basis and are only used to provide supplemental law enforcement services to meet temporary fluctuations in staffing needs. This class is distinguished from Deputy Sheriff I/II in that the latter classifications perform the full range of law enforcement duties within the Sheriff’s Office. It is further distinguished from Retired Annuitant – Safety I/II in that the latter classifications are limited to individuals who are retired from regular employment in Alameda County Service.  Positions in this classification are not eligible for tenure status.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Assigned to Court Security provides supplemental security to a specific trial or a specific in-custody individual.
  2. Escorts in-custody individuals from a detention facility or holding cell to a court and return.
  3. Responsible for the security and safety of individuals held in custody in court holding cells while waiting for a judicial hearing.
  4. Maintains order in court and prepares, processes, and maintains necessary files, documents, and reports.
  5. Oversees inmates while in court.
  6. Performs weapons screening of entrants into courthouse at specified security checkpoints.
  7. Transports inmates from detention facilities to hospitals.
  8. Oversees inmates in hospitals.
  9. Oversees inmate workers, inmates being transported, inmates during visiting hours and during other activities.
  10. Prepares for court visits of attorneys and for the transfer and release of inmates.
  11. Performs other related duties as required. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from High School or possession of an acceptable equivalency certificate approved by the California State Department of Education, such as the General Educational Development Certificate or an equivalent or higher level of education from an accredited college or university.

AND

EITHER I
Experience:

A minimum of 36 months full-time experience as a Peace Officer in a non-37 Act retirement system in a California law enforcement agency (municipal or state police department, Sheriff’s department, or California Highway Patrol) with a separation date within 36 months of application date, or proof of attendance of a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Requalification Course.

OR II
Experience:

A minimum of 36 months full-time experience as a peace officer in a law enforcement agency outside of California and possession of a valid Basic Course Waiver (BCW) issued by California POST.

AND 
License/Certificate:

  • Valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's license by date of appointment. 
Special Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Candidates are not required to be a US citizen but must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. (SB 960)
  • Federal law and County policy requires that certain positions in the class of Deputy Sheriff – Services-As-Needed, which require a commercial driver's license and the performance of duties defined as "safety sensitive," are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.
  • A thorough background investigation will be made of all prospective Deputy Sheriffs – Services-As-Needed. A record of any felony conviction will result in disqualification.
Physical Requirements:

  • Hearing must be normal in each ear.
  • Using both eyes, must have far vision of at least 20/100 without glasses, correctable to 20/20 with glasses. Must be free from color blindness and permanent abnormality in either eye.
  • These standards are confined to far vision and color vision. There are additional standards which may apply to other possible specific visual deficiencies.
  • Applicants must be in excellent physical condition with above average strength, endurance and agility, and must meet California POST approved safety member physical standards.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
