DESCRIPTION

Under direction, to keep watch of and move inmates within the hospitals to deter escape, to assist in transporting inmates between outside medical facilities, and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Positions in this class are unarmed and are located in the Sheriff's Office. Keepers report to a Deputy Sheriff on duty or to a Sergeant in charge at a specified work location.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Guards inmates awaiting trial or confined in hospitals to prevent escape opportunity.

2. Alerts Deputy Sheriff or Sergeant on duty of any attempts of escape or unusual occurrences relating to inmates.

3. Moves inmates within County facilities, and assists in transporting inmates between outside medical facilities.

4. Assists the Sheriff's staff in searching for weapons and contraband.

5. Monitors visitors of inmates as prescribed by the Sheriff's Department.

6. May provide written statement for inclusion in Departmental Incident Reports.

7. May be required to apply restraint devices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Age:

Candidates must be at least 2l years of age at time of employment.

Training:

Must have completed or be currently enrolled in a course in Laws of Arrest and Firearms as specified in Section 832 of the California Penal Code.

NOTE: If currently enrolled in the course, candidates must complete the required training within six months of employment on their own time and own expense.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Provisions of the Penal Code relating to laws and methods of arrest, search and seizure, ethics and discretionary decision making.

Ability to:

• Effectively deal with inmates and the public.
• Think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Be confined to a localized area for long periods of time.
