DESCRIPTION
Under instruction and close supervision, to learn skills of the class of Laborer and be expected to promote into that class.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The class of Maintenance Aide I is distinguished from the higher one of Maintenance Aide II in that the former provides employment opportunities in a crafts or trade classification for candidates with little or no prior work experience. Incumbents receive training that will give them work experience necessary to qualify for the flex promotion to the classification of Maintenance Aide II. Incumbents will continue to receive training and gain experience in the areas that will enable them to gain higher level skills and then are expected to promote the position of Laborer after one year at the Maintenance Aide II level.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Cleans and maintains debris from ditches, culverts, drains and roadsides.

2. Clears creeks and channels.

3. Cuts, chops and removes weeds along roadways and channels.

4. May work on the landscape and/or tree crew under close supervision of a Gardener/Tree/Trimmer and assist with pruning and trimming trees, shrubs and ground cover.

5. Waters and irrigates landscaped areas.

6. Performs graffiti abatement.

7. Sets up traffic control and acts as a safety flag person.

8. Loads and unloads trucks.

9. Assists in the performance of less technical work of skilled crafts and trades persons.

10. Uses hand tools to assist with grading, laying sub-grades, surfacing sections of roads or patching roads with plant mix.

11. May operate pneumatic tools in breaking pavement and excavating ditches and other structures.

12. Assists in supply shop with distribution of safety supplies.

13. Performs inventory control to track materials, supplies, equipment.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

License:

Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver’s License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous 3-year period.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.


Knowledge of:

• Basic methods, materials, safety practices and tools used in road construction and maintenance.
• Basic computer use for record keeping


Ability to:

• Read and write English.
• Follow and understand oral and written instructions.
• Perform heavy physical labor.
• Safely use a variety of hand and/or power tools.
• Track and maintain inventory control on a computer database.
• Work cooperatively with co-workers and the public.
