DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to fabricate, install, and repair, guide, warning and regulatory traffic signs and devices; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Traffic Sign Worker works under the supervision of the Traffic Safety Supervisor, or equivalent of the Traffic Safety section in the Maintenance and Operations Department of the Public Works Agency. Incumbents are each assigned a truck outfitted with the appropriate power equipment to allow them to work alone. Traffic Sign Workers are distinguished from the supervisor class in that the latter has full supervisory responsibility of the Traffic Safety section, whereas incumbents in the class perform duties as assigned, usually with minimal supervision. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Digs holes with clay spade, jackhammer, shovel or post hole digger and installs signs at the proper designated location, angle, and height according to the standards promulgated by the State of California, Department of Transportation. 2. Assembles signs on the job site. 3. Picks up or removes damaged signs and returns them to the shop for repair or replacement. 4. Maintains and stocks signs to be current according to standards as issued; requisitions new signs as necessary and discards or recycles non-standard signs. 5. Maintains paper or electronic records of signs installed and inventory records related to sign shop operation. 6. Observes roads, to ensure that all signs comply with State and Federal standards or repair/replace as needed. 7. Operates computerized layout and graphics design sign making equipment. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I Experience: The equivalent of one year as a Laborer in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) Or II Experience: The equivalent of two years of experience in traffic sign fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair work, in accordance with the current State of California Standards or the equivalent. License: Possession of a valid California Class C Motor Vehicle Operator's license, with no moving violations for the past eighteen (18) months. Working Conditions: Subject to 24-hour call out and must actively participate in the program. Work outdoors in all weather conditions. Subject to loud noises. Work in high traffic areas. Subject to climbing ladders, working from heights, bending, stooping, lifting heavy objects, working overhead, etc. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.
Knowledge of: • The State of California Uniform Sign Chart; State and Federal manuals concerning traffic signs. • The materials and tools used in the erection, removal, repair and emergency fabrication of signs. • Safety procedures and practices. Ability to: • Follow oral and written instructions. • Prepare reports and keep records. • Read and interpret maintenance, traffic and construction manuals, plans, drawings and specifications. • Operate light power equipment such as clay spades, jackhammers, drills and impact wrenches used in digging holes and assembling signs. • Use computer software applications to layout and cut signs. • Lift and carry objects up to 65 pounds. • Work efficiently and responsibility under minimal supervision. • Work, establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and other staff. |
