DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to perform a wide variety of remodeling and maintenance tasks on County buildings; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES These positions are located in the Building Maintenance Department of the General Services Agency. Incumbents in the class of Building Maintenance Worker I perform semi-skilled remodeling and maintenance work on County structures. This classification differs from the next lower class of Building Maintenance Laborer in that the latter performs non-skilled or entry-level maintenance work including, but not necessarily limited to, packing, lifting, moving heavy objects, digging holes and ditches and assisting Stationary Engineers, Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Painters and other building trades personnel in general maintenance. Building Maintenance Worker I differs from the next higher class of Building Maintenance Worker II in that incumbents in the latter class work independently and perform more complex maintenance and remodeling tasks such as basic lock repair, tile setting, concrete work, roofing and rough carpentry. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed. 2. Perform miscellaneous semi-skilled carpentry and cabinetwork, such as making small cupboards, cabinets, shelves, clothes racks, fences and road signs. 3. Install towel racks, bulletin boards, broom racks, and related fixtures. Makes minor repairs to roofs, window screens and doors. 4. Assist in the installation of resilient and ceramic tile floors, acoustical tile ceilings and walls, and miscellaneous replacements of tile. 5. May assist in the pouring and finishing of concrete. 6. May operate a truck, concrete mixer, tile saw, electric drill, roto hammer drill, air compressor, and similar equipment. 7. May assist a Building Maintenance Worker II. 8. May direct the work of inmate helpers, juvenile detainees and other temporary labor forces assigned to assist in the Building Maintenance Department. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I Special Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds safely. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
|
Knowledge of:
• Techniques and materials for maintaining and repairing buildings. • Common tools, equipment and methods of carpentry, roofing, tile setting and masonry. • Basic computer skills including knowledge of Outlook. Ability to: • Follow oral and written instructions. • Read simple plans. • Perform semi-skilled work in a wide variety of maintenance and construction trades. • Instruct and directing assigned helpers. • Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools. • Provide excellent customer service. • Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with employees and the general public. |
