DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision, to work as a lead person over a small crew of laborers.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Maintenance and Construction Worker differs from the next higher level classification of Crew Leader in that the latter is responsible for a wide variety of manpower, equipment and materials. Maintenance and Construction Workers are responsible for small crews of Laborers performing a variety of construction projects in the Public Works Agency. This classification differs from Laborer in that its incumbents generally have lead responsibility over a small crew of Laborers performing a variety of small projects or perform a variety of functions that might include welding, mechanical work, fencing and gate installation and repairs, etc. The next lower level class of Laborer is primarily responsible for doing physical labor tasks. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Works as a lead person with a crew of Laborers in road and flood control maintenance and construction work and personally performs some of the more difficult work. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
|
Either I The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Laborer in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney's Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts)
Or II The equivalent of two years of experience in road, bridge or concrete construction or maintenance work.
License: Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver's License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.
Other Requirements: Positions in this class are required to wear respiratory protection or other safety equipment to comply with OSHA, CAL/OSHA rules and regulations.
Working Conditions: Incumbents are subject to 24-hour call out and must actively participate in the program. Work outdoors in all weather conditions. Subject to intense heat. Work on uneven surfaces. Subject to loud noises. Work in confined spaces. Contact with dust, dirt, poisonous plants, dead and live animals, used syringes and condoms, feces, urine, chemicals, paints, petroleum products, etc. Work in high traffic areas. Subject to climbing ladders, working from heights, working in moving water, bending, stooping, lifting heavy objects, crawling through small spaces, working overhead, etc.
