DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to repair, letter and process books for circulation and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Bookmenders are trained on the job under the supervision of a Lead Clerk, who heads the Physical Processing Section. They may act as leads over Library Aides assigned to the Physical Processing Section. As a minor part of their duties, Bookmenders may be required to completely recover books. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
|
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Examines books returned from branch libraries to determine whether they need mending or are worth mending, and handles accordingly. 2. Under supervision, trains library aides to jacket books and type book cards and pockets. 3. Mends books by taping torn pages, reinforcing corners, taping spines, tightening backs, cleaning covers and pages, Xeroxing and tipping in pages. 4. Processes new books for circulation by numbering and lettering backs using a stylus or typing a label, stamping with County stamp, pasting in card pockets and attaching clear plastic jacket. 5. Cleans and mends 8 mm, 16 mm, 35 mm film and cassettes. Cleans phonograph records. 6. Processes new records, types book cards and labels, jackets the album covers and reinforces album boxes. 7. Puts binders on pamphlets and magazines using electric stapler or pasting, reinforces paperbacks inside both covers and jackets. 8. Prepares books for bindery by checking for adequate margins, missing pages and quality of paper, underlining title and author, and writing call number on title page; types and files new book cards and pockets for reprocessing books upon return. 9. Types book cards and pockets. 10. Types master book cards and duplicates when ten or more copies of one title are required. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The equivalent of six months of work experience.
